Jun 6, 2009 - Ask Dub Schwartz!

Dear Dub,
have a 2003 Mini with 103,000 miles on it and the transmission suddenly went out. The dealer quoted me at $9,000 to repair the it, which is essentially the value of the car. Do you know if anyone has had any luck with extended warranties or with the dealers?
Madder Than Hell

Yea, you're sure facing some tough situation there. Why should you have to pay or take responsibility for anything?

Here's a thought. A 103,000 miles, not only have you gotten good use out of the car, but every rattle, clank, and ding that might crop up is going to be on your dime. So you have a choice. If you spend the $9k and get another 103,000 miles out of it, would it be worth it to you?

Life is full of tough choices and obstacles to overcome. I guess we're all lucky you weren't in charge 65 years ago today when a really tough decision needed to be made.

Why give your money to the dealer; when he treats you so poorly?!!! Instead, find a reputable local auto wrecker who has a nationwide hotline (this is a common thing that good wreckers have) and have them put out a request for a used Mini transmission from as new or low mileage a car as possible; that will fit your car. The wrecker will arrange to have the transmission shipped to them from wherever it is found, and you can then pay for it. Find a reputable local mechanic to install the transmission in your car. Have him pick up the transmission from the wrecking yard; or have the yard deliver it to him. When the trasnmission is installed, which should cost you in total a tiny fraction of 9 grand; drive the car past the dealership, honk the horn, and thumb your nose at them.
