May 8, 2009 - Dangling The Carrot

The Northern California city of Tracy is taking economic stimulus into its own hands.

On Tuesday, the city council passed a resolution that will give buyers of new cars from dealers within the city a $500 gift card that can be redeemed at local merchants participating in the program.

Would a gift card like that be enough to get you into a new car at this point? I'm not sure you can treat cars like an impulse purchase, at least until people start feeling a little more comfortable about their own personal economies.

I don't see how dangling a five hundred dollar carrot will stimulate car sales. You have to be in a comfortable position to buy a car right now and most people just are not budging. Everyone is playing the wait and see game.
