With rising gas prices came the inevitable wave of scammers and quick-buck artists.

An AP story at mysuncost.com caught my eye.

Apparently a couple was convicted in a scheme that was supposed to turn a profit from turning restaurant grease into biodiesel.

Now we know that it is possible to make biodiesel out of restaurant grease. But add in a little greed and these folks bilked investors out of $21 million.

Here's my favorite line from the story:

Defense attorneys said the couple had a legitimate business, but gave investors misleading information.

Umm, would that misleading information also be known as a lie? Then there's this tidbit:

The two had built a plant in Lakeland, but fled as federal investigators closed in. They were arrested last year in Arizona after nine years in hiding.

People with legitimate businesses don't flee.

Keep your guard up. The scammers are everywhere telling you just what you want to hear. But if you still believe in these HHO kits, then I have a bridge you might want to buy.
