Oct 15, 2007 - Not Easy Being Green

Why is this frog smiling? It's not easy being green.

So sang Kermit the Frog on Sesame Street, and these days you might find that tune playing in the halls of Toyota.

Last Thursday a coalition of nine environmental groups on Thursday launched a campaign against Toyota Motor Co. over its opposition to a standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2020 that passed the U.S. Senate in June.

Toyota has joined with the Big Three in backing a House alternative that would set a target of 32 to 35 m.p.g. by 2022, with terms more favorable to the industry.

Toyota has been expanding its truck sales in the United States. The concern is that the Senate bill would lump cars and trucks together, making the target unreachable without limiting truck sales.

So the company with the slogan "moving forward" finds itself in the awkward position of pushing for a lower target for fuel economy, leaving environmental groups and many Prius owners unhappy.

The Prius is almost a symbol of the green movement. Ironic that Toyota now finds itself a target of the environmental movement.

Toyota Prius
or the Toyota Tundra?
Oh what a feeling!

The Prius has the cachet but Honda has the reputation for being the greenest major car company around. Best (lowest) emissions levels fleet wide and they lead in CAFE numbers in the US.
