Trying againThis doesn't sound like a formula for success.

American Axle & Manufacturing Inc., long considered the most successful of former General Motors Corp. parts operations, now is mired in an ugly labor dispute while the market for its products is shrinking.

On Tuesday, 3,650 members of the United Auto Workers union struck American Axle's five U.S. plants.

Follow the money. The company says the total cost of wages and benefits is more than $70 per hour and is not competitive.

"All of the changes we have proposed have been accepted by the UAW in agreements with our competitors in the United States," American Axle Chairman Richard Dauch said. "I have no idea why AAM is being singled out for a different set of economic conditions."

Bold prediction. The union at American Axle falls in line when the choice is job or no job.
