Sep 24, 2008 - Watershed Moments

One hundred years ago today the first factory-built Ford Model T rolled off the assembly line.

The Tin Lizzie cost $850, seated two, and came in any color you wanted as long as it was black.

Can you imagine what the buzz was like on those early 20th century message boards with topics like:

Can the Model T succeed?

My horse is cheaper to own! Why pay the automobile premium?

Who's going to buy the Model T? Nobody needs to go that far.

Left lane riders: Get your buggy out of my way!

Cars are a fad! Horses rule! Pinto and Mustang Riders Club: Meet the Members

What do you think YOU would have been saying about the new-fangled motor car?

Depending on what calculator you use, $850 in 1908 dollars translates anywhere from $14,742 to $389,491 dollars. I don't know how much a horse cost back then but $14k sounds like a lot of money. That thing got a HEMI?
