Jun 3, 2009 - Bankruptcy, What Bankruptcy?

As the Detroit carmaker began retooling after filing for bankruptcy protection, a company spokesman said Monday he did not expect further cuts to GM Racing's budget, which supports NASCAR, NHRA, ALMS and short-track racing activities around the country and adheres to the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" mantra.

"Racing equals good ROI (return on investment)," said Steve Janisse, group manager for Chevrolet Communications. "There are no expected budget cuts right now."

But will it sell the smaller, more fuel efficient cars that Government Motors is promising?

May 25, 2009 - Climbing To The Top

Spiderman does it again! After evading the tax evasion charges (on which the government has something like a 95% conviction rate), Helio Castroneves wins his third Indy 500 and seems a pretty likely candidate to surpass the record 4 wins of AJ Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears.

That's some pretty heady company, and I don't think he's doing it by simply having an owner that can outspend everyone and give him the best car.

Certainly it takes some luck to push a car to its limit for 500 miles and not have some routine part break down on you and take you out of the race, but that affects everyone and you have to start to attribute this to the skill of the driver.

The Andretti clan, on the other hand, seems to find a way to always use up their cars and not finish the race... and it's almost always someone else's fault according to them. This time, 22 year old grizzled veteran Marco Andretti is out on the first lap and blames the other guy. ""The kid doesn't get it," Andretti said. "He never will. He was clueless out there. I was worried about that at the start."

If you ask me, it's the Andrettis that don't get that it's a 500 mile race and you only need to be the last one to be first.

May 15, 2009 - Need For Speed

Bill Elliot wrecked while trying to break his own 22 year old speed record at Talledega when a tire blew at on his second run.

His record is 212 mph, but this car has been up to 252 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats last year.

It sounds rather quick!

May 10, 2009 - Fast Approaching

It was pole day at Indy and Helio Castroneves took the top spot with a qualifying speed of 224.864 mph.

Only two weeks to go until the 500, one of my favorite sporting events each year. I may turn down the sound on the TV and listen on the radio and keep score again this year. You wind up with an interesting chart if you do that.

If you can't get enough of Indy during May like me, you might want to check out www.indy500.com.

In the photo, Brian Barnhart, president of the competition and operations division of the Indy Racing League gives last-minute directions to Hideki Mutoh before his qualifying run....

"You go down this way about 1/4 mile, then hang a left."

May 25, 2008 - Indy

Indy 500 day is always a special day for m. Not because I'm particualrly a motorsports fanatic, but because listening to and watching the Indy 500 was such a big part growing up for me.

My Dad was a real enthusiast and he taught me to appreciate the engineering aspects of watching the 500 as much as enjoying the race.

I have vivid memories of the days when the race wasn't on live TV and we'd listen to the race while having a cookout, or while driving to visit a relative for the holiday.

So watching the 500 is sort of a right of passage to get us to the summer in our household. I've even watched the race on TV while listening on the radio and keeping score.

Dad passed away 20 years ago on the day after the 1988 race and ever since then the race has really been a special time for me and my brother. Both of us insist that Dad is visting our house on race day.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Looking forward to enjoying the race with you again Dad!

Apr 6, 2008 - Lessons Learned

Imagine walking away from thisA lot of people dismiss auto racing as just a bunch of rich boys and their toys, but a lot of important stuff, especially about safety, is learned from racing.

I guess the first lesson is to try and not hit things at high speeds, but when you look at what's left of Michael McDowell's NASCAR ride after a crash in practice and realize he walked away from what used to be that car, you have to figure that one, he's very fortunate, and two, the safety precautions did a pretty good job.

We never even had a car with seatbelts until our 1966 Chrysler Newport, and actually wearing those lap belts was sort of hit and miss. Around 1980 when my future brother-in-law was going through his med school rotations, he came out of his stint in the ER a believer in seat belts. In every single case of patients brought into the ER from car wrecks, everyone who was wearing seat belts were treated and released, and everyone who was not wearing a belt remained in the hospital or died. It convinced him, and I'm not sure what he said or how he said it, but it convinced us. I haven't been in a vehicle without a seatbelt on since. And everyone that may be riding in the car with me buckles up too, or the car doesn't move.

I've been fortunate enough to not test how well the seat belts would protect me, but to bypass such an easy thing to do and take a risk seems silly, even if it's just driving down the street to pick up a kid babysitting at a neighbor's house at night. You never know what's going to come up when you're behind the wheel.

If you want to see the practice crash that resulted in the photo, check it out at ESPN.com

Feb 17, 2008 - Chevordodgota Wins!

Breaking up the monotony of all those left turns! It's the morning of the Great American Race and some motorsports fans out there are actually wondering which manufacturer is going to win today.

While that may be a burning question for devoted NASCAR fans, "stock" car racing has lost me over the years because of the sameness of all the cars. They pretty much all look alike and while that may make it a more interesting test of the drivers, I'd like to see a return to the days of cars on the track being production models, with safety features added of course.

Imagine a racing series where Dodge actually ran a Charger against a Ford Mustang, and Chevy Impalas were running side by side with Toyota Camrys so that viewers actually might see a car that looked like the one that is sitting in their driveway. That was the initial appeal of stock car racing for me.

It might not be a fair race, and one manufacturer might dominate because of their cars and not the money they throw at it, but isn't that the whole point?

Feb 16, 2008 - Ask Dub Schwartz!

Winning the big race was the important thing!Dear Dub,
Are you a NASCAR fan and will you be watching the Daytona 500 this weekend? And who do you think is going to win?
Cletus

I'm just happy that Edmunds.com has provided CarSpace for it's loyal members and that PF Flyer has given me the opportunity to be able to be here on the Alternate Route to field questions like this from consumer driven automotive enthusiasts like yourself who are the smart car buyers who know where to start.
The Daytona 500 on Fox should be a fair and balanced race, especially since the Toyotas, Chevrolets, Fords, and Dodges will be running on Goodyear tires while I lean back in my La-Z-Boy and crack open a Yuengling or two while waiting for the Papa John's delivery boy to pull up to my door in 30 minutes or less with a piping hot pizza so I can enjoy all the hi-def action on my Samsung plasma HDTV in the comfort of my Armstong carpeted living room!
