Oct 9, 2009 - Tokyo Stars

The Tokyo Auto Show is this month and auto shows mean concepts, which are one of the things I love about the shows.

This 122 inch long, 43 inch wide two-seater is the Nissan Land Glider concept. You ride tandem-style in this electric vehicle and the body and tires lean up to 17 degrees into turns like a motorcycle.

I love it when the engineers get to have a little fun.

Be sure to check out the Land Glider and the rest of Inside Line's coverage of the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show

Sep 16, 2009 - Dreamworks

Woo hoo! It's auto show time!

Here from the Frankfurt Auto Show is the Weissman Roadster MF5.

The Roadster is basically a soft-top version of the MF5 Coupe, powered by a 500-horsepower BMW V10. The lightweight speedster will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 193 mph.

Just your basic every day beater.

Apr 10, 2009 - Rite Of Spring

It's spring, or at least the calendar is telling me so as I look out at the snowflakes and get ready to scrape the windshield this morning.

One sure sign of spring is that it's NY Auto Show time and that means concepts!

The Honda FC Sport is a fuel cell vehicle dreamed up by Honda's Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena, California.

Like most concepts, we'll probably never see one in our driveways, but it is fun to look at what's on the mind of designers.

Jan 29, 2009 - Full House

The 2009 Philadelphia International Auto Show kicked off yesterday as Mayor Michael A. Nutter ceremonially drove the first automobile onto the showroom floor at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

All 49 manufacturers from last year have returned to the show with more than 700 makes and models on display.

According to Philadelphia International Auto Show Chairman Joe Magarity, nearly 70 percent of auto show patrons leave with a purchased vehicle.

To date, Mr. Magarity told reporters auto sales are up 16 percent over other areas of the country for this time frame.

It will be interesting to see how well that "70% purchase a vehicle" statistic holds true.

Jan 16, 2009 - Charging Forward

Yet another electric vehcile from GM is unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Cadillac Converj made its debut on Sunday. It uses the same Voltec drive system as the Volt.

Color me a skeptic, but does anyone really think that a vehicle that's going to cost $40,000 and can travel "up to 40 miles on a charge" is the solution to what ails GM?

Jan 14, 2009 - Corker Of A Visit

Guess who's coming to the Detroit Auto Show today?

Senator Bob Corker, one of the most vocal opponents of the automotive bailout/bridge loan is expected to visit the show this afternoon.

Not to be cynical, but I have to wonder what his motive for the visit is. This feels more like a photo op than anything else. One of those "I was against it before I was for it" moments that politicians seem so adept at.

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall as everyone is all smiles to hear what they're really saying to each other?

Jan 12, 2009 - Frizzlezap

The concept cars at auto shows are always a lot of fun even though they pretty much never make it to reality. Add in the current rush to look like practical electric vehicles are just around the corner and you're almost certain to see something to make you go Oooo.

The Dodge Circuit EV is just such a beast.

Chrysler bragged that the Circuit EV sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and has a top speed of more than 120 mph. It uses three powertrain components: a 268-horsepower electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system and a controller that manages energy flow.

Dodge said the Circuit EV has a driving range of 150-200 miles between charges. It plugs into a standard 110-volt household outlet.

I get the feeling that if I test the 0-60 time or that 120 mph top speed, that the 150-200 miles between charges is going to suffer. But it's nice to dream. That's what auto shows are for!

Jan 9, 2009 - Show Time

Forget all those bad things you read about Detroit these days. The 2009 Detroit Auto Show will be the biggest and best auto show next year. There will be more world premieres of production vehicles and concept cars than Tokyo and Frankfurt combined. Maybe that's why it's officially called the North American International Auto Show. Yes, it's that big.

Unlike last year's display of old-school horsepower, the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is expected to have a more forward-looking theme. A big part of that will be the introduction of the 2010 Toyota Prius. It's been fully redesigned for even better mileage than before and it will be joined by a new Lexus hybrid sedan counterpart. Other notable debuts include the 2009 Audi R8 V10, 2010 Ford Taurus, 2010 Lincoln MKT crossover and 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible.

Automobile enthusiasts have been hunkered down just like everyone else. But the advent of auto show season should brighten our mood.

Full coverage starts on Inside Line January 10.

Nov 28, 2008 - Welcome Back!

Seems that Nissan will have a seat at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show after all.

In a swift reversal, the Japanese automaker said its local dealers would help staff the show in February. The company said Monday it would not attend due to financial constraints and a downturn in U.S. sales.

"After a careful review of this decision with our North Central Region management and our Chicago dealers, we have found a way to maintain a presence at the Chicago show through our dealers, while still demonstrating the fiscal responsibility required by these challenging times," the company said in a statement Thursday.

Maybe Ghosn decided that enough is enough and something had to be done to stop the situation in Detroit from dragging all the manufacturers down. Seems like the cost to do an autoshow is trivial compared to the numbers we've had to deal with lately. And good vibrations never hurt!

Nov 20, 2008 - Escape To The Auto Show!

The LA Auto Show is upon us so that means it's time for a little fantasy and future gazing.

If you can't make it to the show, you can get all the latest at Edmunds coverage of the show.

I love concept cars, and while I'll probably get into some of those soon, there are some really far out dreamings in the LA Auto Show 2025 Design Challenge.

Consider the Mazda Kaan, submitted by Mazda R&D of North America,  an electric racing car with a patented electronic tire system and a top speed of 250 mph with no emissions.

While it is a lot of fun to dream, I'm still waiting for the neat stuff I saw at GM's Futurama exhibit at the 1964 World's Fair.
