Jun 15, 2009 - Cloudy Insight

And some people wonder why the auto industry is in trouble.

Consider the headline I saw this morning:

Honda’s Hybrid Insight May Miss U.S. Sales Forecast

Now that doesn't seem like a surprising headline given the situation the North American auto industry finds itself in, but would you expect that they may miss the forecast by 33%??

Sort of makes you wonder who made the forecast, and what the heck they were thinking when they made it. Then again, the "experts" always seem suprised on just about everything they try to forecast.

Feb 6, 2009 - Price Wars?

Looks like things could get interesting in the hybrid market.

Honda Motor Co wants to price its new Insight hybrid car below $20,000 in the U.S. market, a top executive said on Thursday.

While some folks steadfastly insist that there's no such thing as the hybrid premium, hybrids certainly have been priced higher than vehicles of the same size, that do the same job, effectively blunting the savings realized by increased mileage.

If the Insight comes to the US market under $20,000, that equation may change.

Jan 5, 2009 - Looking For The Worst

At times I'm accused of wearing rose-colored glasses, but that has to be a better way to approach things than the way people constantly look for ways to make things look as bad as possible, especially the media.

For example, take the story I read this morning about auto sales in Japan with the headline that includes, "Worst December Ever".

While it is true that auto sales in Japan are off as they are elsewhere, the headline is only possible when sales of minivehicles, one of the growing segments of auto sales in Japan, are excluded.

Fanning the flames of doom and gloom seems to be a way of life for the media, but that's not the way out of the mess.

Of course, when the market doesn't react as much as the "experts" expect to this news, and they are 'surprised', it will be be another one of those end-of-bear-market signs.

The media is really going to have to work at it to try and keep us all scared to death.

Nov 29, 2007 - Rising Sun

Exports of imports are rising!Nissan, Toyota, and Honda all reported strong gains in exports in October.

Nissan's exports were up 17.5% and their exports to Morth America rose for the third straight month and were up34% on the year.

Honda had it's fourth striaght month of export growth, up 10'6%.

Toyota exports rose for the first time in two months and were up 19%.

Seems that there must be interest in high quality, smaller, more economical cars out there. Perhaps the Big Three will pay attention this time around. Oh that's right. They figured out we want a hybrid Escalade.

Oct 29, 2007 - Aiming High

Honda has hybrid hankeringsAs reported in Green Car Advisor, Honda has hinted at a hybrid sports car, and said it will show a nearly production-ready model of its FCX fuel-cell electric car concept at the Los Angeles auto show next month.

Currently Honda sells fewer than 100,000 hybrid vehicles per year, but expects that number to increase to over 450,000 due to the hybrid sports model and a new 5-seat gas-electric hybrid due in 2009.

Honda has said it expects to sell at least 200,000 units globally of the new, as yet unnamed five-seat hybrid, with the Civic hybrid and the new sports car model contributing the rest.

Those are some mighty ambitious targets. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
