Dear Al, I'm pretty sure that the Segway will replace the car right about the time I collect that huge fee for transferring those Nigerian funds for that guy that keeps emailing me. The Segway is an intersting machine, expensive toy, and really is sort of fun to move around on. But beyond the group Segway tours of places like Washington DC, or the guy who rides one around the football stadium on game days for advertising purposes, I'm not sure I see the "revolution" coming. The Segway seems to use today's cutting edge technology to solve an already solved problem. It tries to fit into a very crowded niche. Walking and bicycles come to mind, and both are healthier and cost a lot less. But the way I figure it, if the Segway is going to make the auto obsolete, it needs to do something spectacular soon. So I have this idea for a publicity event. All I need is a little backing and sponsorship. Got any Nigerian transfer money laying around? Don't get left behind
Aug 16, 2007 - There's a race?
GM: Deal could put it in lead in electric car race In this USA Today story, it said that GM had signed a deal with a battery maker that "could propel it ahead of Toyota Motor in the race to bring plug-in hybrid and electric cars to market" There may indeed be a race on, but is anybody watching? Especially with regard to electric cars which have to date, not really shown that they are a practical proposition in today's market. I seem to recall that the Segway was going to make the internal combustion engine automobile obselete too. Now the places you see them most is being used for rolling tours in places like Washington, DC or Atlantic City, NJ. Clever? No doubt. Fun? Sure looks like it. Grocery getter? Ask me between October and April. The David Hitch editorial cartoon shown here which came out around the time of all the Segway hoopla says it all, and resides in a place of honor on my desk. Given enough time and some technological breakthroughs in batterty technology, EV's might get beyond being the expensive toys or experimental concepts that they seem to be relegated to at the moment. Prices at the pump
