Chevy's Volt, Renault and Nissan anouncing plans for an electric car network in Israel, so there must be room on the bandwagon, right? Chrysler Corp. and India's Tata Motors reportedly have signed a development deal for Chrysler's neighborhood electric car unit to import and market a new vehicle based on the Tata Ace mini-truck. I just find it fascinating that Renault hopes to sell 10,000 to 20,000 electric cars a year in Israel and now we have a report said that Tata is gearing up to initially ship 10,000 vehicles a year. This reminds me of the guy that everyone knows. If you have a cold, he had the flu. If you broke your leg, he broke his in three places. Ratan Tata, the reclusive tycoon who heads the tea-to-steel conglomerate, will kick off an auto show in New Delhi with the unveiling of the long-awaited "People's Car", which will carry a sticker price of 100,000 rupees or 2,500 dollars. Analysts say the inexpensive car could revolutionize prices worldwide. I'm pretty much a believer in you get what you pay for and a vehicle that has used plastics and adhesives in place of welding to cut costs makes me think this is as much a publicity ploy as it is anything else. I'm sure that standard U.S. safety features like airbags and other requirements would probably double the cost of the Tata, taking away some of the "cheapest car" cachet, if anything that strives to be cheap can actually have cachet. If this vehicle has any effect on auto prices here in North America, I guess I'll have to eat one of Dub Schwartz's old hats! Read the full story at FT.com and AFP
