Ask Dub Schwartz!

Dear Dub,
I'm certain that hybrids are the way to go rather than diesel for cutting down on oil use. The 2010 Prius already embarrassed the Jetta TDI in the run from LA to LV and back. Is it common in the diesel diehard community to be such a masochist that they want to see another beating?..

Have you wondered how hybrid vehicle sales are doing during these interesting days?
John O'Dell has taken a look at those numbers on Green Car Advisor and at first blush it appears that hybrid sales have fallen off more than the average.
It's no secret, hybrids haven't been doing well lately, on dealers' lots, in the media, or in a lot of political arguments...

Not exactly the picture that comes to mind when you think of hybrid vehicles is it?
Kenworth has announced an order for 185 hybrid trucks from Coca-Cola, the truck manufacturer’s largest-ever hybrid truck order. The 150 diesel-electric tractors and 35 hybrid trucks will be on the road this year...

Hyundai Motor Company plans to start retail sales of the first LPG-electric hybrid Elantra in July 2009 and promises to be the cheapest of all currently available hybrid vehicles. The Elantra LPI HEV leverages Hyundai's vast knowledge of LPG-fuelled vehicles to develop a hybrid that will be very economical to operate. It promises to be as much as 40 percent cheaper to operate than other competitor models in the marketplace and 50 percent less than a conventional Elantra model powered by a petrol only engine, according to Hyundai...
The sky is falling! That always seems to be the cry as people look for a problem where it seems unlikely that there is one.
The Chicken Little crowd has some red meat with electromagnetic fields and hybrid vehicles...

Admit it, when you think of a hyrbid vehicle you're not thinking of a garbage truck.
But that's exactly what's being tested in Sweden as refuse hauler Renova is testing Volvo Truck's diesel-electric hybrid.
Now the details always bother me, so I'm wondering how much the garbage capacity of the truck is impacted by the added weight of the hybrid system and batteries...

On this greenest of green days, I ran across an editorial by Patrick Deneen in the Dallas Morning News that I have to share with you.
Everyone seems to be going green now. It's as if we're celebrating St. Patrick's Day all year round...

It’s a widely known fact that cars contribute to the numerous issues that pollute our air. Researchers have looked into many ways to improve this and have come up with some technologies over the years. Some of these include the hybrid vehicle, the hydrogen fuel cell engine and through educating the public on the dangers of greenhouse gases...

Sure it's a hybrid, but it's an Escalade. How green is it really?
I have a healthy skepticism about the rush to be greener than the next guy...
While in the office this week I kept hearing "well, that's not a true hybrid, it's a mild hybrid". I get that the car isn't 100% electric but at what point does a vehicle go from 'mild hybrid' to hybrid? Is it like a low fat cookie v. a fat-free cookie?
Well, curiousity got the best of me and I headed into the halls of research to find out. I also headed to the grocery store to see if my cookie analogy held true. I'm happy to say, it did...
