Bankruptcy, What Bankruptcy?

As the Detroit carmaker began retooling after filing for bankruptcy protection, a company spokesman said Monday he did not expect further cuts to GM Racing's budget, which supports NASCAR, NHRA, ALMS and short-track racing activities around the country and adheres to the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" mantra. "Racing equals good ROI (return on investment)," said Steve Janisse, group manager for Chevrolet Communications. "There are no expected budget cuts right now." But will it sell the smaller, more fuel efficient cars that Government Motors is promising?..

Climbing To The Top

Spiderman does it again! After evading the tax evasion charges (on which the government has something like a 95% conviction rate), Helio Castroneves wins his third Indy 500 and seems a pretty likely candidate to surpass the record 4 wins of AJ Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears. That's some pretty heady company, and I don't think he's doing it by simply having an owner that can outspend everyone and give him the best car...

Bill Elliot wrecked while trying to break his own 22 year old speed record at Talledega when a tire blew at on his second run. His record is 212 mph, but this car has been up to 252 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats last year. It sounds rather quick!

It was pole day at Indy and Helio Castroneves took the top spot with a qualifying speed of 224.864 mph. Only two weeks to go until the 500, one of my favorite sporting events each year. I may turn down the sound on the TV and listen on the radio and keep score again this year...

Indy 500 day is always a special day for m. Not because I'm particualrly a motorsports fanatic, but because listening to and watching the Indy 500 was such a big part growing up for me. My Dad was a real enthusiast and he taught me to appreciate the engineering aspects of watching the 500 as much as enjoying the race...

Lessons Learned

A lot of people dismiss auto racing as just a bunch of rich boys and their toys, but a lot of important stuff, especially about safety, is learned from racing. I guess the first lesson is to try and not hit things at high speeds, but when you look at what's left of Michael McDowell's NASCAR ride after a crash in practice and realize he walked away from what used to be that car, you have to figure that one, he's very fortunate, and two, the safety precautions did a pretty good job. We never even had a car with seatbelts until our 1966 Chrysler Newport, and actually wearing those lap belts was sort of hit and miss...

Chevordodgota Wins!

It's the morning of the Great American Race and some motorsports fans out there are actually wondering which manufacturer is going to win today. While that may be a burning question for devoted NASCAR fans, "stock" car racing has lost me over the years because of the sameness of all the cars. They pretty much all look alike and while that may make it a more interesting test of the drivers, I'd like to see a return to the days of cars on the track being production models, with safety features added of course...

Dear Dub, Are you a NASCAR fan and will you be watching the Daytona 500 this weekend? And who do you think is going to win? Cletus I'm just happy that Edmunds.com has provided CarSpace for it's loyal members and that PF Flyer has given me the opportunity to be able to be here on the Alternate Route to field questions like this from consumer driven automotive enthusiasts like yourself who are the smart car buyers who know where to start...
