I've run into at least a handful of people who were under the same impression that last Sunday was Father's Day this week, so I don't feel too bad jumping the gun. Besides, it gave me a whole week to say, "Hey it's Father's Week!" if anyone asked me why I was lounging around.
I have to go through the slide collection to find one of my favorite photos of my Dad, sitting on a sheet in the middle of a field, parts all around him, taking apart the engine of the car he borrowed for his honeymoon, but these two will do...
Dear Dub,
It's no wonder the auto industry is in the shape it is because almost all the cars they build are junk! I had a Civic, then a PT Cruiser, and now a MINI and the transmission failed on all of them. In fact, the MINI is going to need a second tranny replacement before 40,000 miles...

Remember all the dire predictions about people not buying cars from a bankrupt company being a reason we had to throw money at GM? It didn't matter that people kept flying on bankrupt airlines, or any other example that could be shown, we had to throw that money away.
Well we wound up at bankruptcy for GM anyway...
Cash for Clunkers - New Mazda Specials
Jun 18, 2009 6:35 am | Categories: new mazdaPosted by florencehonda
It appears likely that the Cash for Clunkers bill will pass, and as it comes to vote here today or in the next few days, if it passes, President Obama has already indicated that he would sign the bill. This bill would allow for great deals for new Mazda shoppers in our Cincinnati market and across the country, and we are looking at which Mazda vehicles would be candidates for the program.
How it works: As the bill currently stands (before signature), a new Mazda shopper could trade-in their "gas-guzzler" vehicle (defined as getting 18 mpg or less) and in return for buying a new vehicle with better fuel efficiency, get a government voucher towards the purchase of the new vehicle...
Wandering through the news this morning and came across the not-surprising headline:
GM in Daily Talks With Obama Auto Task Force
Then I came to this paragraph:
GM will retain four plants it had planned to close, putting them on so-called standby status in case the North American auto-sales market accelerates faster than anticipated and it needs more capacity.
Isn't it that kind of overly optimistic planning that got GM into their current condition in the first place?
Saab may still survie, but the future is uncertain after a consortium led by Swedish boutique sports-car maker Koenigsegg Group AB agreed to a preliminary deal to buy the troubled company from General Motors Corp.
From the not-sure-if-this-is-surprising department, only 783 Saabs were sold in the U.S. in May, which is fewer than the number of Hummers sold...

AR Index 537.85 -29.74 (-5.24%)
Stocks of individual interest
Toyota 76.67 -3.18
GM 1.26 +0.05
Ford 5.93 -0.45
Dow 8612.13 -152.36 (-1.74%)
One factor affecting the AR Index that's really starting to bug me is the run up in prices at the pump. The average price at the pump has increased every day since April 29 and for no apparent reason other than speculation on the commodity markets. No actual supply or demand issues that would warrant the increase...
And some people wonder why the auto industry is in trouble.
Consider the headline I saw this morning:
Honda’s Hybrid Insight May Miss U.S. Sales Forecast
Now that doesn't seem like a surprising headline given the situation the North American auto industry finds itself in, but would you expect that they may miss the forecast by 33%??..
