Time again for my weekly look at some Big Three news and to check on the Alternate Route Automotive Index. 'Toyota way' inspires lean practices Toyota and other Japanese companies search for new management styles to bring Japan's economy back to life. Oh What A Feeling

There's a new No. 1 in the auto industry. Toyota took the global automotive sales lead from General Motors in the first quarter of 2008. GM says its first-quarter sales dropped across the globe by less than 1 percent, while Toyota (NYSE: TM) sales were up 2.7 percent during the same period...
Well, surprise, surprise!  The game was not a snoozer at all.  CarSpace fans who were instant messaging during the game were surprised that the Giants held the Pats to 4 points for most of it and in the final minutes took what Patriot fans had declared theirs going into the game. But what about the commercials?!?!?! In canvasing the community and neighborhood parties, the Planter's Cashew commercial was indeed among the funniest.  For car and car-related ads the 2008 Toyota Corolla was particularly funny in addition to the Bridgestone tires ad with screaming animals (sorry Richard Simmons - not so funny)...
At my house, we won't be to interested in the game unless the Giants pull out all the stops and make it interesting.  I'm too old to care about men in tight pants as I still remember the Chicago Bears and Refrigerator Perry.   My prized guacamole dip will be present - no double-dipping please. That said, I'm watching for the car commercials.  Yes, I will sit through the hoopla, confetti, halftime show and more in order to see what the creative agencies have thought of this year. In the line-up will be spots from Cadillac, Audi, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai and perhaps even GMC...
It's an American tradition.  'Nuff said.  For American gridiron it is the pinnacle of the sport.  You make it through the season, hopefully don't lose too many players due to injury and then wiggle through the playoff's until... yes, you are in the Super Bowl. For fans, whether you are an NFL junkie or not, the Super Bowl is the Sunday to yell, scream, find a team to cheer and yes, wait with baited breath for...

OK, so I'm a history enthusiast too. General George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas day in 1776 with 5,400 troops, hoping to surprise a Hessian force at their winter quarters in Trenton, New Jersey. A bold move, a surprise move, though not strategically very important as Washington was forced to give up the town because most of his force had failed to make it across the river in time...
We had our all-company meeting at the LA Auto Show last week. After the meeting, we were able to wander the floor. I went with a dual purpose...

Weighty Issue

The concept cars unveiled at auto shows are always some of my favorites even though the chances of seeing more than bits or pieces of any concept in actual production are slim. This week at the Tokyo Motor Show Toyota showed us the 1/X concept whose big idea is a carbon fiber frame that reduces the weight of the hybrid concept to a scant 925 pounds. The driver in my golf bag has a carbon fiber head and the entire club only weighs 10 ounces, so it's really easy to relate to just how much weight the carbon fiber is saving...

Omens and Portents?

One of Toyota's advertising slogans has been: I love what you do for me - Toyota! Maybe just not as much anymore. Toyota slid from first place to fifth place in the 2007 Consumer Reports rankings which were just released, and Honda moved into the top spot...
