Bonds, GM Bonds

These Bonds drove some pretty hot cars, although I'm pretty sure none of them were GM models. Financial and legal advisors to GM bondholders wrote an open letter to the Treasury Secretary and other members of the auto task force raising their concerns about the restructuring. "We are concerned that the company is putting too much faith in a near-term turnaround in the economy that would enable annual car and truck sales to reach previous levels," representatives of GM bondholders said in the letter...

Sort of an interesting anniversary today. Eighty-six years ago today the one-millionth Chevrolet rolled off the assembly line. Now we're talking billions of dollars each month just to keep GM's head from going under the water...

On Monday, the plant that assembles the HUMMER H2 was shut down and staff members have been told it will be for at least 15 weeks. A HUMMER spokesperson would not confirm the exact details of the length of the closure, but said, "we will produce more when we get more dealer orders." H2 sales were down more than 50 percent in 2008, with just 374 units sold in December. There are lyrics to the bugle call Taps...

It's amazing that it's being reported that GM is "no longer teetering on the brink of bankruptcy". It's almost as if someone thinks that the rescue is a one time lifeline. Let's hope that's the case and we stick to our guns...

So It Can Be Done

Back on New Year's Day I noted a story where GM became the first automaker to sell one million vehicles in China in a single year. Now there's this item from Inside Line: SHENYANG, China — While General Motors awaits word from Washington on its request for a multibillion-dollar bailout, the cash-strapped U.S. automaker has just opened another assembly plant in China with local partner Shanghai Auto...

This Way Out?

It looks like General Motors is going to get their bridge loans to try and turn things around. It also looks like there's mounting pressure for Rcik Wagoner to not be at the helm for it. On Sunday, Sen...

Hard Times In Mayberry

Rising fuel costs and the credit crunch certainly have played their part in hurting GM, but they are hardly the root cause of all the trouble. Consider this passage from a Washington Post article: These problems began to surface about 15 years ago because regulators changed the accounting rules. In 1992, GM says, it took a $20 billion non-cash charge to recognize pension obligations...

Mixed Signals

GM is postponing some of its spending on product development as it tries to conserve precious cash during a severe U.S. auto sales downturn and a global economic slump. That's not surprising in these belt-tightening times...

Do You Need To Be Einstein?

You keep hearing things like "GM is too big to fail". Why? Bankruptcy is something that happens to companies that need to resize and readjust to changing market realities. The North American automobile market has certainly changed and GM really hasn't done that great a job of adapting to the shifting landscape and that's why they find themselves in the spot they're in...
