When prices soared at the pump, you could be sure that the scammers wouldn't be far behind trying to make a quick buck. There's a lot of buzz about HHO kits. The idea is to use electricity from the car's alternator to electrolyze water into HHO, a mixture of pure hydrogen and oxygen...

Running On Empty

As if I needed any more evidence, allow me to present my mileage figures on my return trip from vacation where I was forced to fill up with a 10% ethanol blend. On the trip down from State College, PA to Williamsburg, VA my mileage was 32.7 mpg using "unblended" fuel. That was a little lower than I normally get on the highway no doubt due to the full load of 4 adult sized passengers plus luggage, but still not too bad...

A week ago friday, oil traded at a record high of over $147 per barrel, and we have a bunch of people running around saying it won't do us any good to open up drilling for our own oil resources because we won't see any immediate effect and it will take years to get the oil, so that won't have any effect on prices. I guess we better stop working on alternative fuels since that will take time to develop as well. But I digress...

Well it's a big day in our house. Today is the 16th birthday of our daughter and that means time for the learner's permit. So right after 6AM basketball practice - that's right, 6 in the A of M - I'll be taking her to the driver's license center to take the permit test...

The IRS brings a lot of thoughts and images to your mind. Most of them aren't repeatable in mixed company and the Beatles captured a lot of it in the song "Taxman" even though they were referring to the British counterpart. But in the face of increased pressure from gas price, who would have thought that the IRS would be one of the first to provide a bit of relief of that pressure?..

We always hear a lot of nonsense from politicians, and since this is an election year we're going to get more than our fair share. The candidates are going to come up with sweeping plans to "improve" things while trying to say things you want to hear in the hope of chasing down your vote. When you hear these promises, take some time to actually think about them...

Is there anything sadder than seeing what the next owner of your car has done to it? Just over a year ago I sold my 1996 Nissan Sentra after purchasing my new Versa. The Sentra had 236,000 miles on it, and while it certainly wasn't in pristine condition, I made the effort to maintain the vehicle and it continued to serve me well...
