Turning Tide

AR Index     680.53  +21.32  (+3.23%) Stocks of individual interest Toyota  90.67  +1.08 GM        10.83  +0.83 Ford      4.55     +0.09 Dow 11510.74    -32.81 (-0.28%) Oil continues to fall, off more than a third from its July highs and my prediction of a fall turn-around for the index still looks pretty good. It will be interesting to see if the "accidental release" of photos of the production version of the Chevy Volt will have any impact.

AR Index     659.22  +4.71  (+0.72%) Stocks of individual interest Toyota  89.59  +1.41 GM        10.00  -0.13 Ford      4.46     +0.05 Dow 11543.55    +157.55 (+1.38%) Not even hurricane Gustav could stop the slide of oil prices although the price at the pump has been stagnant for almost three weeks now. And despite the best efforts of the election year doomsayers, the ecnomy is percolating along just fine. Consider the following from Herman Cain at northstarwriters.com On August 26, Investor’s Business Daily reported data from the Internal Revenue Service showing that the average U.S...

Worm Turning?

There's no doubt that the price of oil has been a huge factor, both at the pump and on dealer's lots. Oil had leveled off a bit the last couple of weeks, but is down again this morning even in the face of hurricane Gustav. So I'm standing by my thought that the AR index is at the end of an inverse head and shoulders pattern and about to reverse course...

AR Index     688.23  -23.92  (-3.36%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  90.75  -1.59 GM        10.36  -.40 Ford      4.89     -0.27 Dow 11479.39    -302.96(-2.57%) Oil and gas prices continue to slide and I expect the automotive stocks to resume their turnaround as we head into the fall. Here's the "new" Big Three news of the day. GM Won't Buy Advertising Time For 2009 Oscars Amid a sharp downturn in automotive advertising on television, General Motors Corp...

Market Looking Better, Not Perfect

AR Index     712.15  +58.43  (+8.94%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  92.34  +9.70 GM        10.76  +0.66 Ford      5.16     +0.35 Dow 11782.35    +498.20(+4.42%) I do like the way that light crude oil line continues to drop and drag along gas prices with it. The manufacturers seem to have lived through the reporting of second quarter results and are rebounding a bit. I thought I'd include a comparison chart on the "Alternate Route Three" and how their individual stock prices have fared since I created the index...

Weathering The Storm?

AR Index     653.72  -31.59  (-4.61%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  82.64  -5.90 GM        10.10  -0.90 Ford      4.81     +0.06 Dow 11284.15    +153.07(+1.38%%) Automotive stocks had to deal with the double whammy of weak July sales plus the reporting of second quarter results as the ground continues to shift underneath them. It's a matter of shifting production to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles that consumers are switching to, and there's simply a certain amount of pain that's going to be involved with that. Crude oil continues its downward move - I'm not going to fall into the trap of calling it a spiral just yet - and prices at the pump continue to creep down...

AR Index     685.31  -69.67  (-9.23%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  88.54  -0.73 GM        11.00  -2.09 Ford      4.75     -.73 Dow 11131.08    -336.26 (-2.93%) Oil continues to slide and drags gas prices along with it. The automaker stocks took a bit of a hit, although that could have been taking some profits on a bounce, as hard as that is to imagine. The cost cutting measures at Ford and GM continue and we'll see how the markets react this week.

AR Index     754.97  +97.79  (+14.88%%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  89.27  -0.10 GM        13.09  +3.71 Ford      5.48     +0.82 Dow 11467.34    +412.15 (+3.73%) What a difference a week makes. Oil prices started down, gas prices followed, and Ford and GM stock moved back up, taking the AR Index along for the ride. Sort of nice to have positive news on the 100th anniversary of both the Model T and Fisher Body Works.

AR Index     657.18  -18.21  (-2.7%)  Stocks of individual interest Toyota  89.37  -3.80 GM        9.38   -0.86 Ford      4.66     +0.19 Dow 11055.19  -176.77  (-1.57%) Gas prices finally bumped up 10 cents in my area after about 5 weeks of floating at $3.99/gallon. The price of crude 5 weeks ago was around $118/barrel, so I'm not sure why the prices at the pump stayed level here over that time span. The auto sales figures really sent investors away from the auto stocks, but for everyone who was selling, there was a buyer who sees the stocks as a bargain...
