Countdown to Bond: GoldenEye, The One That Started It All
Sep 30, 2008 2:44 pm | Categories: bond cars, my z3Posted by jriz
It was November 1995. I was 12 years old and sneaking into my first movie. The ticket girl asked in what year I was born and I fumbled out "1981" since the movie was rated AA14 in Canada. This was the first Bond movie made in six years and the first one I ever saw in theatres...
Hideki Tanabe of Power House Amuse Passes Away
Sep 30, 2008 12:06 pm | Categories: automotive news, auto industry, japanPosted by avoturboworld
Hideki Tanabe, proprietor of the world-renowned tuning and parts company Powerhouse Amuse, passed away on September 20 after enduring a long illness, leaving behind his wife, the company he founded and thousands of bereaved fans, friends and acquaintances. Responsible for the incredible R34-based Carbon-R time-attack car and the S2000 GT1 that many of you will remember from Gran Turismo 4, Tanabe-san was also Powerhouse Amuse's resident tuner, parts designer and race driver. I met with him personally several years ago to do an article on their S2000, and had a great day out there...
Texting and Cell Phones Bad. Sparky? Just Fine.
Sep 30, 2008 8:06 am | Categories: car news commentaryPosted by jriz
Our esteemed Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law bans on talking on cell phones while driving (unless with a wireless device) and recently texting while driving. Both are excellent measures for road safety and to prevent idiots from swerving in their lane in front of me while drifting between 45 and 15 mph as they discuss today's One Life to Live with Becky and Stef. So, good job...

Lately, Caltrans has been doing nightly work on the Santa Monica Freeway around Downtown Los Angeles. As a result, my car has been showered with pebbles and gravel on way too many occasions. Over the years, a clear toll has been taken on my car's front license plate frame. Similarly, the front of the car has more chips on the hood and bumper than a can of Pringles.
Not wanting others to experience the wrath of Caltrans roadwork, I've copied some information from Caltrans' web site below. Hopefully, this will help some of you avoid the carnage of our tax dollars at work.

My Very Own Jack-O-Lantern!
Sep 29, 2008 8:24 am | Categories: car reviews, driving adventuresPosted by jriz
I've been driving a Jack-o-lantern since last Wednesday. I picked it up at this pumpkin patch in Moorpark, where it was the prized choice of the bunch, bigger than anything I've ever seen before. I hollowed out the center using a Caterpillar back hoe, then adorned it with stylish red eyes and a licence plate for a mouth...
As the late Paul Newman said as Butch Cassidy, "Who are those guys?"
I'm sure you don't recognize The Big Three, a Brian Epstein managed group that did not become the Beatles.
A lot of folks don't recognize the Big Three from Detroit these days either.
But on Saturday the Senate approved $25 billion in loans to Detroit, intended to spark innovation...
It annoys the heck out of my kids, but I have terminal shutterbug disease and carry my digital SLR pretty much everywhere I go, just in case.
So when I was visiting my buddies at Tire Town and one of them asked if I had my camera because he just heard on the scanner that there was a problem at the shopping center next door I was ready.
I even beat the fire department to the scene and got about 100 shots as they extinguished what used to be a Dodge Stratus...
Ask Dub Schwartz!

Dear Dub,
In all the hub bub in the stock market recently and bailout deals and all that, the bailout of the automakers seems kind of lost in the shuffle. With all the money that the government is getting ready to throw around, do you think we should bailout Detroit?
One of the Undecided
Dark days in Detroit
Their sales are way down
Smug smiles of the past
Have turned to a frown
They didn't adapt
to the changing game
They forged right ahead
making more of the same
Gas may be rising
But no problems they see
So General Motors
Brings us the Hummer H3
The dinosaurs thought
They were too big to fail
But they were wrong too
Now we're hearing the wail
We need to survive
Just lend us some money
If it wasn't so sad
This all would be funny
I know it sounds cruel
and heartless and mean
But sometimes bad companies
do leave the scene
You dug your own hole
Don't sit there and cry
Say, here's an idea
Try building something we'll buy!
Scenes from the Curb: The Dodge Challenger that Ate the R8
Sep 26, 2008 8:30 am | Categories: scenes from the curbPosted by jriz
You know, the Audi R8 usually doesn't look like a small car. Other than its height, the R8 generally looks sizeable and even a little imposing. And then you park it next to the Dodge Challenger, which is abso-freakin-lutely enormous...
