One of the worst things about Auto Malls is the disconnection from the community. It is no longer a neighborhood business. In a Mall you don’t get the chance to have regular visitors from the residents and local business’ and the lessons learned from them...

Whether Cash For Clunkers was a success, or whether it even was a good idea is another topic for another day. Today I'm interested in (and isn't that the self-centered point of a blog, what interests me?) the makeup of the most purchased and most clunkerized vehicles.
What we're looking at is a population of buyers who suddenly were pushed over the edge into buying (almost) any new car of their choosing...

DETROIT — General Motors Co. will begin removing its "Mark of Excellence" logo from vehicles as the company places greater emphasis on its individual brands.

AR Index 625.43 +6.50 (+1.05%)
Stocks of individual interest
Toyota 85.75 +2.04
GM 0.75 -0.12
Ford 7.41 +0.04
Dow 9509.28 +373.94 (+4.09%)
Things continue to look up for the AR Index (despite dragging along GM) and I thought it would be interesting to use a chart of Ford's stock price for the Apr-Aug period to show what a difference a year makes.
I really hope that Cash for Clunkers doesn't kill this momentum when the cars that would have sold in October don't because they were bought under C4C.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff's office has paid more than $1 million to a local auto repair shop for service and maintenance despite the fact that the county has its own fleet service department.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported Sunday that the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office does not have a contract with the shop, and Sheriff Chuck Wright did not seek bids for the work as required by the county's procurement code...

Ask Dub Schwartz!

Dear Dub,
I think anyone classifying the Chevy Volt as a "hybrid car" has it all wrong. GM calls it an "Extended Range Electric Vehicle" because it is not propelled by more than one source of power. It's always powered by electricity - the onboard generator never directly powers the wheels - it merely charges the batteries...
