My search for the perfect new car and my experiences in the aftermarket automotive accessory industry

Mar 6, 2009 - Thoughts on the best SUV?

So my boyfriend is looking to buy an SUV that will be used to tow a 21' fishing boat, but will also for work purposes.  He is in sales, so the car he chooses needs to look good but also be able to tow the boat.  He was thinking about either a Ford Explorer or Chevy Tahoe.  Thoughts on which is better?  Or is there a better American-made SUV out there in your opinion?  Thanks!  :)

I have a Tahoe and I can easily haul a 20 foot travel trailer. You are correct the Hemi would pull the boat as well but the FOrd expolorer would be a little weak. My best friend just got the GMC version of the Tahoe with the 6.0 and he got 20 MPG on a trip back east but he wasn't pulling anything. I get between 11 and 13 pulling the trailer. But remember unless you are going down hill there are no low power situations when towing.

Also consider the Dodge Durango/Chrysler Aspen. They've been discontinued by Chrysler and dealers are all but begging people to take them off their hands. The Hemi will definitely tow the boat, and with the multi-displacement system (shutting down 4 of the cylinders in low-power situations), you'll get respectable mileage.
