Jan 22, 2009 - What Detroit is Doing Right? Plenty

By MIKE COX SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST

America's Big Three automakers got pounded on Capitol Hill last month. Senators from both parties took turns ridiculing General Motors, Ford and Chrysler as out-of-touch fossils, churning out poor-quality products that virtually no one wants to buy.

Wouldn't it be nice if America's automakers actually made cars that customers wanted? New hybrids, for example, and electric vehicles, mid-size cars that rank high in quality and more models that get 30 miles per gallon?

Actually, that's exactly what Detroit is doing. Not in a couple of years, not next year, but now.

I invite every member of the U.S. Senate to come visit the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Here is a sample of what they would see:

  • The brand-new Ford Fusion Hybrid, which is the most fuel-efficient mid-size car in America, averaging 41 miles per gallon.

  •
  • Chevy's new mid-size Malibu, which gets 33 miles per gallon -- better than the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

  •
  • Three new electric vehicles from Chrysler, including a gasoline-electric minivan and Jeep model and an all-electric sports car.

Here are a few other facts for the doubters:

  • This model year, Detroit will make more than 137 vehicles that get 30 miles per gallon or more.

  •
  • The Big Three will also sell 25 hybrid models, 38 versions of flex-fuel vehicles and eight models that run on clean diesel.

  •
  • Ford and GM tied for the leadership position in the prestigious 2008 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study -- with 11 models ranked in the top three of their respective segments.

Despite the public scolding recently heaped on the Big Three in Washington, Ford and GM still make the top-selling vehicles in the country, the Ford F-150 truck and the Chevy Silverado.

Senators who think Detroit is still stuck in the dinosaur age may be shocked to learn that the Big Three are the leading purchasers of computer chips nationwide. In fact, GM, Ford and Chrysler are making cutting-edge vehicles featuring the latest in technology, engineering and fuel economy. Detroit's automakers spend $12 billion annually on research and development. No other industry can match that.

More changes are needed, and the Big Three understand that their pace of change must be accelerated. But the last thing our economy needs right now is for 13 million jobs to be threatened. One out of every 10 jobs in America is related to the auto industry. That's why President Bush wisely agreed to release funds as a loan -- not a bailout -- to help the auto industry get through this Wall Street credit crunch.

America's auto industry is building some of the safest, most fuel-efficient, technologically advanced vehicles in the world. That will be on display at this month's auto show in Detroit. As many have said: Facts are stubborn things. Unfortunately, the facts about America's auto manufacturers may have run up against something even more stubborn -- the U.S. Senate.

Oct 9, 2008 - Malcolm With His Pants Down.....Interesting

Our esteemed Service Manager, Malcom Simons is in the photo below with his pants down to his ankles.  Why would he be photographed like this knowing that we would put him on the blog?

Good question.  I don't think he thought that far ahead.

Malcolm raced all season at Redline Raceway this summer, and made it to the bracket finals at Pine Valley Raceway, where this illustrious photo was captured.  He made it through the eliminations at Pine Valley to the semifinals.

Malcolm not only raced the Jupiter Chevy Camaro, but he had a foot race as well.  At Pine Valley, along with Drag Racing, they also paticipated in "Olympic Activities."  One of which is a foot race with your pants down to your ankles.

Malcolm may be a fantastic drag racer, but he couldn't hold a candle to the lady to his left.  She won the race.  Malcolm, on top of it all, you have a photo on the Internet in your nice boxer briefs, but you also got beat by a girl.

WAY TO GO!!-we still love you though.  Keep up the good work!

Sep 3, 2008 - GM extends employee pricing offer, adds '09 models

DETROIT, Sept 3 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp has extended its employee-level pricing discount program by one month through the end of September and increased the number of 2009 model year vehicles carrying the offer to boost sagging sales and clear out inventory.

The program, launched in late August, applies to almost its entire line-up of 2008 model year vehicles and has been expanded to include most 2009 model year vehicles at dealerships, including all Silverado and Sierra pickups, GM spokesman John McDonald said on Wednesday.

GM's better-selling cars, such as the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac Vibe are also included in the extended offer, the No.1 U.S. automaker said.

Sep 3, 2008 - Hey, It's so good it's a game!!!!

Chevrolet Hands Over Customized HHR

To SimBim

PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo)

ZÜRICH – August 29, 2008: Chevrolet has handed over the keys a very unique car to games developers, SimBim. They have now created the V-WTCC, which stands for Virtual World Touring Car Chamionship. A V-WTCC RaceRoom will be set up at six FIA WTCC events in Europe where the winners from the qualifying races can compete against one another for a ticket to the final in Monza. The Virtual World Championship Touring cars will be driven over several rounds and has currently reached the fifth round of the season. Until 5 September everyone can take part in online races at the Anderstorp circuit in Sweden and try to get to the top of the classifications.

The world of car sport has never known such a ‘green’ concept with the same exhilaration and adrenalin rush and even the same noises and actions as the ‘real life’ WTCC races. Virtual racing is rapidly gaining popularity with car sport enthusiasts. Both youthful talent and experienced drivers play the range of games from SimBim in order to maintain their skills during the winter period or learn new circuits.  The main prize is the unique Chevrolet HHR, in a special customised version that is also equipped with an environmental friendly LPG installation from the German Fahrmitgas. Besides the car itself, the winner will also receive a voucher for € 500 worth of LPG.

Said Eric Nève, Chevrolet Europe Motorsport Manager: “The Chevrolet HHR and the V-WTCC form a perfect combination of the message that Chevrolet is conveying: distinctive cars for a reasonable price for youthful drivers who also pay serious attention to dealing responsibly with natural energy resources. This initiative is also very much in line with the recent FIA campaign “make cars green” the WTCC is adhering to. The V WTCC contest, therefore, enables us to target environmentally aware, energetic and sporting car enthusiasts.”

As was the case at the WTCC races in Brno, the Chevrolet HHR will be used as a leading car in Oschersleben, this weekend.

Aug 23, 2008 - Give this pickup truck the gold

Not many pickup trucks have melted headlights and turn indicators, so I figured it had to be my buddy's Silverado that appeared in a Chevy commercial during the Olympics coverage.

Sure enough, there was my pal Firefighter Craig Monahan beside the truck he had driven in from Staten Island on 9/11. One of the two off-duty firefighters with him had leaned out the window, imitating a siren.

"He's doing, 'Whoo, whoo,'" Monahan recalled.

They parked near the south tower in time to survive the first collapse and then the second. I watched Monahan immediately afterward crawl into the ruins to search for the 11 missing firefighters from his firehouse, Engine 24/Ladder 5.

When he finally returned to his Silverado, Monahan saw that the falling debris of the south tower had stopped inches short of his front bumper. The surrounding vehicles had been gutted by fire and the truck's front lights had melted into what looked like huge tears.

The steering wheel had also begun to melt and the interior of the cab was singed. Monahan reached in to turn the ignition key and was astonished to hear the engine start right up.

Somebody operating a wrecker helped clear a path for Monahan to pull away. He changed a front tire that had been bubbled by the heat and he headed for the firehouse.

"The first victory of World War III," Monahan announced.

Somebody salvaged the oversized nameplate from Ladder 5's destroyed rig and affixed it to the side of the pickup that ferried them to and from The Pit over the days that followed.

The sight of them going by in this burned and battered truck with "Ladder 5" bolted to the side always drew a rousing response from folks in the street.

"Every time we got in the truck, they were just cheering," Monahan said. "It was American spirit at its best. ... 'You can't keep us down!'"

The recovery effort ended and Ladder 5 got a new rig and the firehouse suffered a new tragedy when it lost two members in the Deutsche Bank fire last year.

Aug 12, 2008 - GM offering more fuel-efficient pickup trucks,SUVs

8/

12/2008, 12:04 a.m. EDT,  By DEE-ANN DURBIN,  The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Corp. is releasing new, more fuel-efficient versions of its full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles later this fall.

The XFE — or extra fuel economy — versions of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs will get one mile per gallon more in both city and highway fuel economy than non-XFE versions. The boost will give them a total of 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 on the highway.

On XFE models, GM improved the aerodynamics by extending the front lower air dam, lowering the suspension and revising the chassis tuning. The automaker also reduced the mass with aluminum parts, including an aluminum spare wheel and 17-inch aluminum wheels, gave the vehicles low rolling resistance tires and powered them with a 5.3-liter, ethanol-capable V-8 engine that has an aluminum cylinder block and heads.

GM stressed that the vehicles still have the same towing capability.

The XFE pickups and SUVs will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. GM spokesman Brian Goebel wouldn't say how much more they will cost than non-XFE versions.

GM began offering an XFE version of its Chevrolet Cobalt small car earlier this year. The automaker said it sped development of the XFE trucks and SUVs because of consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles. GM's truck and SUV sales fell 23 percent in the first seven months of this year.

GM also offers hybrid versions of the Tahoe and Yukon and plans to bring out hybrid versions of the Silverado and Sierra in the first half of 2009. The company said last week that about 4 percent of its Tahoe and Yukon sales have been hybrids so far this year.

Aug 8, 2008 - HOLY TIRE SMOKE! Chevrolet announces power ratings for new Corvette ZR1

Canwest News Service

Published Friday August 8th

When it was introduced at the North American International auto Show in Detroit in January, the 2009 Corvette ZR1's power was estimated at 100 horsepower for each of its 6.2 litres of displacement.

GM Powertrain has completed SAE certification of the ZR1's supercharged LS9 V8 and the results exceed the estimate -- 638 hp and 604 pound-feet of torque.

The LS9's output is nearly 103 hp per litre. General Motors says it is "unquestionably the most powerful automotive production engine ever manufactured" by the automaker.

"One of the most amazing things about the Corvette ZR1 is the level of refinement that our designers and engineers have attained,"

says Ed Peper, Chevrolet's general manager. "Even with all that power, this car has road manners that

will allow our customers to enjoy it on the streets as a daily driver and on the track.”
