Darlene's Car Blog

Hi! This is a small blog where I will post my car ramblings.

Apr 26, 2008 - My new Squidoo lens on my Aveo.

I started a Squidoo lens on my love-hate relationship with my 2004 Aveo LS.  If you want to see it, visit here:  Darlene's Aveo Lens

Mar 29, 2008 - I miss My Geo Metro

I had to give up my Geo Metro for a 2004 Aveo and I'm sorry I did it because the Aveo has had quite a few problems.  Maybe I was spoiled by having a car as good as the Metro which gave me trouble-free driving for many years before it just wore out and died.  I think GM should seriously consider making these cars again, the same way, except with a hybrid option.  I may actually buy a new one if they do that.

Mar 14, 2008 - People Who Park by Touch

OK, this is a little rant.  I live in an area near a large university where I am an alumni and use the nice gym that they have there.  I don't qualify to buy a parking pass to park in their lots, so I park on the side streets.  Well, people there love to park by touch.  That is, when they pull behind or ahead of someone parked on the street, they park up to where they actually hit the car and then pull back.

On my Geo, I had a nice, black, plastic bumper that could take these little hits with no problem.  But, the new car I have has a painted bumper, so every little tap shows.  Today, I had someone park behind me, with plenty of space behind his truck, with his bumper practically touching my car.  Now, he wasn't actually touching my car, but he was very close.  There were two little round spots as to where a license plate frame bolt would be, but they didn't line up to his and they were flat instead of round and Phillips-head like on his frame, so I wasn't sure if he actually did the damage.  And, I know they weren't there earlier because I had just rubbed out a scratch on the bumper two days ago and hadn't gone anywhere since because I've been riding my bike to save gas.

Later, as I was driving around, I saw someone else parking and they had their car all the way backed up to the car behind them and they were still pushing on the accelerator to go back.  They could have damaged the other car's parking pawl or brake doing that!  I've seen this many, many, times.  Yes, I know I have a few little dings on my bumper, but I actually care about my car and was planning to repair or repaint the body eventually.

What is it with these people?!

They don't always get away with it.  My neighbor had her car parked on the street when someone parked behind her and hit the corner of her bumper.  She called the police the next day and the owners of the other car actually got into trouble.  I think they did quite a bit of damage in her case, though.  In my case, I would probably be told to get some touch-up paint.

So, if anyone wonders why I haven't done any bodywork on my car, I've decided that I probably don't want to do so until I move away from this area.
