Nov 19, 2009 - "Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman" Authors Matt Stone and Preston Le

Winning is the story of a side of Paul Newman that most of the world didn’t know-- avid, successful and well-respected car racer and team owner. From his racing career, begun in earnest at an age when most race car drivers contemplate retirement; to the partnership he formed in 1983 with Chicago racing entrepreneur and team owner Carl Haas; to the impressive roster of automobiles he owned, from the Porsches and Ferraris to quirkier modified VWs and Volvos, this book tells the story of an intriguing facet of a man of talent, conviction, and enduring spirit. The authors, Matt Stone and Preston Lerner will be signing books from 1-3 p.m. in the Museum galleries.
Admission to the Museum is free on November 21 with purchase of the book in the Museum Store. Petersen members receive a 10% discount on their purchase.

Nov 9, 2009 - Tribute to Trans Am Racing

For its 11th annual fall celebration of the Legends of Motorsport, The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles will present Tribute to Trans-Am on Thursday, November 12th at 6:00 p.m. This will be a distinctively memorable event for all who join The Petersen's honored guests, friends and colleagues, along with its exhibit of historic Trans-Am race cars famously associated with the Trans-Am racing heritage.

The events evening will begin with cocktails and a Museum presentation that includes famous Trans-Am race cars on display. Following will be dinner and a film screening of Trans-Am racing's action-packed history. Renowned drivers and team principals whom we all have known or read about will be introduced on stage to tell some of their best stories - both passionate and amusing - about racing in the Trans-Am series.

The evening's guests will recall how the Trans-American Sedan Championship got started in 1966 when the Sports Car Club of America saw a potential for sedan racing on leading road racing circuits in the United States and Canada. Tales will be told of some of the hottest Trans-Am race cars conceived and built by factory-fed tuners, and how these big-horsepower 2-door hardtops quickly caught the public's attention. To vividly bring back those times, in the metal, Trans-Am cars displayed in The Petersen's galleries will include the Championship Mark Donohue Penske Camaros (1968 and 1969), Championship Parnelli Jones Bud Moore Mustang (1970), Sam Posey's 1970 Dodge Challenger, Championship Mark Donohue Penske Javelin (1971), Championship George Follmer Roy Woods Javelin (1972), plus a host of others. Every Trans-Am car seen at The Petersen will have documented race history attached to show its place in this historic era of motorsport.

Continuing the Petersen's annual tradition of honoring the most illustrious people and cars in motorsport, the Museum's program includes prized Trans-Am memorabilia in a time-honored auction, a lively interlude of competitive bidding that always delights the dinner audience. In addition at the Museum on this expansive Tribute to Trans-Am evening of November 12th will be a preview of the Bonhams and Butterfields Auction of Automobiles, Motorcycles and Memorabilia on Saturday, November 14th.

Jul 24, 2009 - Creative Minds of Auto Design at Petersen Automotive Museum

2009 Honda FC Sport Concept Car currently on display at The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Despite the dark clouds currently looming over Detroit, the auto industry in the United States is alive and creativity is the key to its survival. For many years, domestic and foreign auto manufacturers have looked to California for inspiration. Because of this, there are more automobile design studios in Southern California than anywhere else on earth. Since the early days of the automobile, the cars from California have always been a little different. Brighter colors, flashier styling, more dramatic proportions, and “outside of the box” ideas are the norm. Is it the climate? Is it the culture? Is it Hollywood? Come to our panel discussions on Tuesday, August 25, and Tuesday, September 15 to find out.

The Petersen Automotive Museum will host two panels of proffessional automotive designers from two different generations who will share their views on what influence California culture has had on their work and the industry as a whole.

• Ron Hill started his design career at GM in 1954. He helped pioneer GM’s adoption of CAD systems in the 1970s and later served separate terms as the Chair of the Industrial Design Department and the Transportation Design Department at the Art Center College of Design before retiring in 2000. A few of Ron’s design projects include the ’65 Corvair, ’72-’73 GTO and Firebird, and the Pontiac Fiero.

Jun 26, 2009 - California Car Design Exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum OPENS SA

CALIFORNIA CAR DESIGN: LOCAL STYLE, GLOBAL INFLUENCE

From the Packard Darrin to the Mazda Miata, cars designed in Southern California have ranked among the most highly regarded throughout automotive history. California Car Design: Local Style, Global Influence will tell the story of these and other locally designed automobiles and explains how progressive local designers like Harley Earl and Dutch Darrin brought a fresh approach to a conservative profession. Even after virtually all Los Angeles based vehicle manufacturers and coachbuilders closed shop following World War II, Southern California continued to shape automotive design on a large scale because of local customizers like Coachcraft and the Barris brothers whose work could be seen in dozens of enthusiast publications, on television, and in motion pictures.

Today the Southland remains at the forefront of innovation thanks to the area’s large number of corporate design studios, influential educational institutions, and ongoing willingness of southland motorists to embrace new ideas.

Vehicles on display will include a 1919 Pierce Arrow with a Don Lee body designed by renowned GM designer Harley Earl, America’s first post –WWII sports car: the 1947 Kurtis Omohundro, the 1950 Oldsmobile “Polynesian” built by Valley Custom, Clark Gable’s Hillcrest -customized 1941 Cadillac, a George Barris Mustang built for Frank Sinatra, production vehicles designed in California, a never before seen full scale clay model from Chrysler, the 2009 Honda FC Sport concept car that debuted at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, and many more.

California Car Design: Local Style, Global Influence runs through February 7, 2010.
