Even though Christmas is a little more than two months away, Reed Brothers Dodge is staring early working to make sure needy children throughout the community have a great holiday.

Reed Brothers Dodge invites you to share in the holiday spirit by donating new, unwrapped toys from October 20 - December 18, 2008. Toys must be new, in original packaging, not gift-wrapped. Anything appropriate for boys or girls ages 1-12 will be accepted. All gifts collected in Maryland will be given away to children in Maryland, so you'll be helping your neighbors.

Toys can be dropped off at Reed Brothers Dodge at 15955 Frederick Road in Rockville, Maryland 20855 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, and the last two Sunday's of the month 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This is probably my favorite road sign. Ever. An Apache attack helicopter is hovering over the highway waiting for speeders in this humorous photo. The signs are everywhere…at least in Virginia…but has anyone actually been ticketed for speeding by an aircraft?

But please, everyone, keep your eyes on the road. There are enough scary drivers on the roads without a bunch of you trying to spot the flying police through your sunroofs.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

1) Make sure your pet can handle a trip. A car-sick dog or cat can make your trip miserable. The American Veterinarian Medical Association says some animals just simply can't adjust to traveling. Take your dog or cat out on test drives around your neighborhood before your trip. If your pet can't handle it, don't push it. And don' feel guilty about leaving Fido or Fluffy with a caregiver.

2) Talk to your veterinarian. All vaccinations should be up-to-date. Ask your vet for a health certificate you can take on your trip that says your pet is healthy and has had a rabies shot.

3) Dedicate a full suitcase or bag to your pet. Bring food and bowls, a pet first aid kit, bedding, a favorite toy(s), a leash, collar and tags. The American Red Cross suggests bringing a current photo in case you are separated from your pet.

4) You don't have to put your pet in a carrier, but no traveling with the head out the window. It can be very dangerous, especially on busy roads. There are hundreds restraints that can secure your dog or cat. These harnesses act just like seat belts and give your dog or cat more space and less anxiety.

5) Make sure your pet is welcome. Many hotels and parks accommodate pets. Many don't. Friends or family may have pet allergies or may simply feel uncomfortable, so make sure to ask.

Finally, talk to your veterinarian about your trip. He or she may have more recommendations. After all, pets are a lot like people; each one is different.

When you're far from home, the thought of searching an unfamiliar town for pet care help can be daunting. But a little careful planning now will help you enjoy your trip down the road.
