May 13, 2008 - Toyota Yaris vs Hyundai GetzToyota Yaris vs Hyundai Getz
Overview The Toyota Yaris has gone to great lengths to advertise their vehicle and it is a great small vehicle. The downside to it is that if you're looking for a vehicle that can tote around a large amount of people, this is definitely not the car for you. Is the Hyundai Getz worth purchasing though? Personally, I would never be seen purchasing this car. Not only does it lack an attractive appearance, but also lacks innovative features. For everyday driving of course, there is nothing wrong with this vehicle if you have the intention of keeping it in the city. But it is definitely not for the curvy and bendy roads out in the country. The Toyota Yaris definitely beats out the Hyundai Getz in almost all areas. Details The Toyota Yaris has gone to great lengths to advertise their vehicle. They are boldly standing by the fact that this car has clever thinking and tons of features. When you first enter the vehicle will most likely be surprised at the amount of space that there actually is. As you sit in the car you can see clearly out of it without any obstructions in view. From a driver's perspective this is definitely a good thing. If you look at the stats of the engine it certainly doesn't appear to be anything spectacular. The engine is a 1.5 L four-cylinder that produces around 80 kW at 6000 RPMs and about 141nM of torque at 4200 RPMs. For every day use though, this engine definitely does the job. The car being discussed is fitted with a four speed automatic transmission. Although this may not be the preference of many, it actually fits the car quite well. It managed to stay in the correct gear at all times with no problem. With the ability to go from zero to one hundred kilometers in about 10.2 seconds, this car was definitely starting to impress me. Although 10.2 seconds is not a record time, this is very reasonable for a car of this size. Once you're ready to drive the vehicle be sure to only lightly press down on the acceleration as it is very sensitive. Since the acceleration is so touchy, it may take a little bit of time to get used to before mastering. Even the slightest amount of pressure can send this vehicle flying to great speeds. I would deftly recommend getting used this before taking it out on the highways. There is one thing you can be sure of when driving the Toyota Yaris, and that is you will absolutely never run out of any storage spaces. Seriously, they can be found almost everywhere in the vehicle. In fact, there are a total of 25 storage spaces that can be found throughout the vehicle. You can easily fit up to four normal sized adults without any problems, but if you try to put fit any more than that you will find that it will get fairly tight, pretty quick. So if you're looking for a vehicle that can tote around a large amount of people, this is definitely not the car for you. As far as the sound system goes in this vehicle, you should be very pleased. The CD player plays normal CDs, but is also MP3 compatible. The sound clearly comes blasting out of four different speakers, providing you with a pleasurable music experience. One of my favorite features is that the steering wheel as button controls for the radio. But these controls you can adjust the song selection and radio station without even taking your hands off the wheel. At first, he may find it quite difficult to read the center set speedometer. However, with a bit of practice will get used to this and may even actually learn to enjoy it. You will find the digital tackle major speedometer located in the console within your peripheral vision at all times. You can easily glance over to see them without taking your eyes off the road for dangerous amount of time. This is definitely good since you are able to keep an eye on your speeds. If you are big on safety you can add additional safety pack for an additional $750. This option adds seven airbags to the vehicle bringing it up to a five star safety rating. Personally, I think at this option is more than worth it. Even though the Toyota Yaris comes equipped with driver and passenger air bags, every extra safety feature is definitely welcomed. The trunk of the Toyota Yaris is actually quite a sad sight. It is insanely small and doesn't provide sufficient room to store anything that you would normally put in your trunk. In comparison to the Hyundai Getz, you might as well not even have a trunk. The only plus side to this trunk is that it comes equipped with a hidden spare tire, which doesn't really make for the size of it. In conclusion, the new Toyota Yaris is a great smaller vehicle. It has decent features, a great engine, and is quite enjoyable to drive. The only major downfall I found with this vehicle is the lack of trunk space. Other than that, one of the flaws may be in the price for what you get. The design definitely appeals to the younger generation more than it does to the older generations, and would make a great first car experience to have. Now it's time to discuss the Hyundai Getz. Before doing my research on this vehicle I had very low expectations of it. Since it was acting as a replacement for the Hyundai Excel, which was as hideous as a car could possibly get, I wasn't expecting it to be anything really special. Once inside the vehicle though, I was shocked at the large size of the interior proportions. With the two door model, there really isn't enough room for the people in the back seat. Not only are they crammed in the car behind the passenger and driver, but the windows in the back don't even roll down. This gives passengers in the back absolutely no freedom and can make them feel a bit trapped. If you're claustrophobic, then you better make sure you are sitting in the front. At the same time though, while in the front seat you find yourself reaching your extremely far back just to reach your seatbelt. The engine in the Hyundai Getz is a 1.6 L engine that produces a mere 78 kW of power. The numbers may seem small, but worked wonders for this car and feels a lot speedier. Another plus about having a smaller engine is fuel consumption. The Hyundai Getz uses approximately 6.2 L of fuel per 100 km traveled, which certainly isn't bad. When you're out on the road the car certainly doesn't feel as large as it may seem from the inside, which in this case is a good thing. What I like most about the size is that you can finally feel that go kart style of driving that you may remember from older small cars. For some reason, most modern cars do not give you this kind of satisfaction. You are able to zoom through the streets and traffic with ease, great visibility, and complete control. Is the Hyundai Getz worth purchasing though? Personally, I would never be seen purchasing this car. Not only does it lack an attractive appearance, but also lacks innovative features as well. For everyday driving of course, there is nothing wrong with this vehicle if you have the intention of keeping it in the city. If you're often out in the country and on winding roads in your best bet would be to stay away from this car. In conclusion, the Toyota Yaris definitely beats out the Hyundai Getz. Both vehicles at the end of the day are not terrible ones to own. The Yaris just appears to have been built with a better quality in mind. It also has a much better looking exterior appearance. If you want a cheaper car that will take you from point A to point B with no problem, then you can go the Hyundai Getz. However, for just a little bit more money you could get a much better quality and stylish car if you go with the Toyota Yaris. Jan 24, 2008 - Hyundai i30If my memory serves me right, June, 2007 Hyundai Motor had official press release for its new mid-sized model i30 and now on sales in S. Korea. Hyundai i30 is mid-sized car like Hyundai Avante or GM Daewoo Lacetti but major difference is Hyundai i30 is hatchback mid-sized to appeal both families and youngsters. Until recently, in Korea, somehow hatchback model was not popular much and for that (I have to admit) Hyundai i30 may rewrite history of hatchback car in Korea. Hyundai went to 2007 Geneva Motor Show with i30, and these are the directly from 2007GMS press information. Geneva 2007: Hyundai introduce a new car, the i30 and a new alpha-numeric nomenclature philosophy. Future new models will bear the prefix "i" and an additional 2 digits. Why "I"? Primarily because "i" stands for INSPIRATION which is one of the 3 pillars of Hyundai's European brand positioning (Quality, Self-assured, Inspiring). But "i" also stands for intelligence and integrity, and that is what customers have come to expect from Hyundai; and for innovative, which is what the i30 is all about. In all these forms "i" lies at the core of any Hyundai brand promise. From this premise the "i" badge is a natural development. Welcome to the i World! With the i30, Hyundai introduces a new dedicated European model range firmly positioned in the mainstream C segment. Designed for those who want stylish practicality with a distinctive dash of sporting flair, the i30 is aimed at the discerning individual who wants something different, but with proven integrity and quality. Available at launch as a 5-door hatchback, followed by an estate car, the i30 opens a new chapter for Hyundai in Europe. Exterior Creative Flair Flowing curves, emphasised by strong character lines highlight the broad stance and long wheelbase of the i30. The clearly defined unbroken waistline unifies the classic proportions. The effect is modern, yet exciting, giving a dynamic impression of performance and capability. Key words: elegant and balanced sporting style. A more cultivated design language The distinguished frontal styling, sporting but non-aggressive - represents the new design identity of Hyundai. The pronounced dual intake frontal styling seems to mould effortlessly into the bonnet and A pillar lines. The upsweep of the rear window lines mirrors the lower character line. The harmonic effect creates a distinct and dynamic posture. All elements fully integrated The sculpted rear appearance is achieved by a combination of qualified curves that extend the waistline and reflect the curvaceous front and side styling. Every element of the design works in harmony. The seemingly effortless interaction of front and rear light clusters, unobtrusive roof spoiler and superb front proportions, all contribute a powerful sense of proportion and purpose. The interaction of dynamic sloping surfaces gives a pronounced sporting touch. Interior Dynamic refinement The long wheelbase and generous width of the i30, combined with Hyundai's acknowledged skill in interior space packaging have produced an interior fully focused upon class-leading comfort, functionality and practicality. Dynamic refinement has been applied to every aspect, including air management, the light airy ambience, seating comfort and intuitive ergonomics. The benefits of dynamic refinement The i30 was conceived from the beginning as a driver's car. The clarity of the instruments, tilt and telescope steering wheel, supportive sporty seats and optimal gearshift positioning are all evidence of this. For extra clarity, LCD technology has been used for the central info display and the instrument panel mounted display and warning lights. Generous directional air vents ensure optimum interior air distribution. Two-tone interior trim, with special attention to the upholstery fabrics and materials has produced a elegant and fresh, highly "European" interior environment. Blue instrument lighting The LED based blue instrument lighting, already adopted in the new Santa Fe and Hyundai upper market ranges, is a distinctive feature. The advantages are less eyestrain and fatigue under all ambient light conditions, helping to maintain peak driver alertness and vision. The blue lightning also represents a recognition of the Hyundai brand which gives the occupants a confided impression of being in a Hyundai car. The ergonomics of dynamic refinement For years now, Hyundai has been proving that a car does not have to be large to feel spacious, or carry a premium price to offer an intelligent interior. The i30 is just the latest expression of this. Intuitive ergonomics are evident in all of the minor controls. The convenience of the steering wheel audio/communication switches and column stalks, together with the easy to handle positioning of heating, air conditioning and power windows and mirrors amply demonstrate this. The easy access to the integrated Audio system, map pockets and other stowage and storage areas are another Hyundai strength that characterises the i30. Even the positioning and precise feel of the automatic gearshift has been further optimised. All contribute to the reality of a driver's car. Seating Seating to inspire superlatives A car that offers above average sporting appeal must also provide the supportive seating to enjoy it. The front seats and contoured rear seats of the i30 provide long distance comfort and support. Attention has been paid not only to the form, with orthopaedic design input, but also to the stitching and using superior materials. The result is seating comfort designed to meet and match the very best European ideals. The ideal integrated interior The i30's dimensions at 4,245 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,480 mm high, fit i30 totally to current C Class expectations. In addition, the long wheelbase of 2,650 mm offers superior inside spaciousness, which has received the full force of Hyundai intelligent interior design. The extra space allowed the designers to optimise every aspect. The result is increased freedom of movement, optimal seat and instrument positioning, and increased comfort. Both front and rear head and legroom are well above the accepted average. Adaptability throughout Every i30 has 60/40 split folding rear seats which fold whenever required for added storage, functionality and practicality without compromising on safety and comfort. The i30 offers rear seat passengers fully contoured support, increased legroom over most rivals and excellent cabin air management. For the front seat occupants, height adjustable seats and lumbar support could not be more easily placed or operated. With excellent legroom, drivers can enjoy the ride in a very comfortable setting. Rear space with the capacity to convince The i30 matches above average occupant space with generous, easy access luggage capacity. A useful and fully useable 821mm length, 1,040 mm width and 558mm height in the luggage area gives an impressive 340 litres load volume with the rear seats upright. With the rear seats folded flat, the load space length is increased to 1,141 mm increasing the load volume to 1,250 litres. As in any Hyundai, the utility and convenience in the i30 has not been overlooked with a standard luggage cover and an optional restraining net. Equipment Fully equipped to fit every purpose Hyundai have always been recognised for their generosity of equipment at all trim levels, and the i30 builds upon that tradition. The range of standard equipment combined with a full selection of reasonable cost extras, allows i30 customers to fully tailor their car to their wishes. A wide selection The i30 will be available in 4 different trim levels. Even the entry level trim "Classic" offers an abundant array of features the integrated Audio system (Radio+CD+MP3+USB+AUX), driver seat height adjuster, and front power windows. The more upscale "Comfort" offers electric heated and body-coloured outside mirrors, keyless entry, driver seat lumbar support, front seat active headrests and front fog lamps. The sportier "Style" version is available from the 1.6, 122ps power level, with 16" alloy wheels, 205/55 R16 tires, sports suspension, tire pressure monitor, semi-leather seats and manual air conditioning all standard. The top-of-the-range version "Premium" lives up to the badge by offering all these items, plus automatic air conditioning, ESP, ECM mirror, park distance control, cruise control and rain sensor. ESP of course is for all versions and all trims available as an option while for the most European markets ESP will be standard feature. Storage, stowage and convenience No one can dispute that Hyundai are among the best when it comes to intelligent interior convenience, stowage and storage packaging. The i30 lives up to, and builds upon this reputation. Depending on trim levels, a sunglass holder, a cup holder, a central console storage, easy to reach door map pockets, seat rear pockets and central armrest mounted storage, and rear cup holders are additional convenient features. The capacious glove compartment is also cooled when air conditioning is fitted. Engines & Transmissions Engines and Transmissions A choice of three petrol and three diesel power options, combined with manual or automatic transmission means the i30 can meet virtually every driving, or geographic powertrain preference. All petrol engines have 16v CVVT and variable inlet technology. All diesel engines can be best described as state-of-the-art. A real choice of power and dynamics The i30 offers a wide range of engines. At the entry-level, Hyundai's new 109ps 1.4 petrol engine offers a sparkling combination of fuel economy and performance with 137 Nm torque. A new 1.6 engine gives 122ps and 154 Nm torque, while the range topping 2.0 offers 143ps with 186 Nm torque. In terms of diesel, a new 1.6 CRDi is available in 90ps version with 235 Nm torque and 115ps versions with an outstanding 255 Nm torque. At the top end, the 2.0 CRDi puts out an exhilarating 140ps with 304 Nm torque. All feature variable geometry turbo charging (VGT), low friction balance shaft technology and high-pressure common rail diesel injection for minimised engine originated NVH. To meet environ-mental policy, i30 offers DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) for all diesel line-up. Transmitting the power Hyundai understands that performance means more than just engine output. That is why transmission packages have been optimised for real driving satisfaction. Automatic Transmission For adventurous driving spirit, an elegant, yet stylish step gate shift lever has been adopted, allowing extra precise control of the new i30's automatic transmission. Manual Transmission Manual transmission remains the favourite for European drivers. The new i30's manual gearbox also boasts newly developed high-efficiency features that reduce noise and enhance durability. The 5-speed all-synchro transmission of the i30 has been specifically engineered to match the sporting nature of the car with precise, short throw shifts. The 2 litre diesel features a new 6-speed manual transmission. Suspension and braking to match the performance In any of the four available launch versions, the Hyundai i30 offers a dynamic, yet cultivated driving experience. MacPherson strut front suspensions and multi-link rear suspension have been fitted to perfectly complement the high design rigidity. Ventilated 15 inch front and solid 14 inch rear discs* with 4-channel ABS and ESP* mean the dynamic appearance is matched to real on-road handling control. A range of 15, 16 inch steel and 15, 16 and 17 inch alloy wheels, with low and ultra-low profile tyres add visual impact to the sporting dynamics. The result is a car that simply demands to be driven. Safety Aspects The safety aspects Like every other Hyundai, the i30 was safe even before it reached prototype stage. Advanced design systems and sophisticated computer simulation, combined with intensive component testing meant that by the time the real tests came only conceptual fine-tuning was required. That is typical of the Hyundai approach to safety. It begins on the drawing board, is thoroughly tested by prototype stage, and fulfils every expectation on the road. Passive safety The i30 is fully equipped to protect. In terms of passive safety, it features dual front, side, and curtain airbags, active headrests, seatbelt pretensioning and seatbelt reminders. Also, as with every Hyundai vehicle, the passive safety features are fully grounded in a state-of-the-art safety structure. This includes deformable zones, occupant protection cell and 3-way load distribution technology. Further rigidity has been achieved with reinforced A-pillars, strengthened bulkhead, front and side members, and toughened B and C pillars.
