(Basel, Switzerland) Hyundai Motor Company, the official automotive partner of Europe´s greatest sporting event, hosted Hyundai Eurofest on June 6 in Basel, where an estimated 30,000 people celebrated the spirit of football and prepared for the kick off of the UEFA EURO 2008™ games.

As one of the EUROTOP Partners for EURO 2008, Hyundai is continuing to be one of the most visible brands around football, the most popular sport in the world. Hyundai Motor, South Korea´s largest automaker, has been carrying out various global marketing programs since January to add to the excitement surrounding the games. The programs culminated in a grand finale Friday, where tens of thousands of football fans visited Hyundai´s pavilion in the Fan Zone in Kaserne.

David Taylor, UEFA General Secretary; Hanspeter Gass, member of the cantonal government of Basel; Kun-hee Ahn, President of Hyundai Motor Europe; and Jae-kook Choi, President of Hyundai Motor Company´s Sales & Planning, were among the VIPs that attended the official ceremony for the Eurofest.

"We love football. We love the excitement of the game," President Choi said during his welcome speech. "We share the strong passion of the European fans. EURO 2008 is a celebration of universal brotherhood. It brings people together in harmony and happiness, and that is the vision of Hyundai."

Goodwill Ball Road Show

The highlight of the Hyundai Eurofest was the finale of the Goodwill Ball Road Show. This is a Road Show that has been Hyundai´s flagship of the global football program since its first introduction at UEFA EURO 2000™. For the fifth time now, Hyundai has facilitated the passion and goodwill of many football fans in the world through the Hyundai Goodwill Balls. These are 4.5 meter-high giant inflatable balls decorated with national flags and the Hyundai/ UEFA EURO 2008™ logo. The 20 balls were shipped to their respective countries in March this year, where they embarked on nationwide tours collecting thousands of fans´ messages of good luck and support for their national teams and their wishes for a successful UEFA EURO 2008™.

All GWBs were gathered in Basel for the Eurofest, creating a splendid scene which attracted visitors to the GWB finale ceremony. The balls will be displayed on site of each stadium or Fan Zone for the respective team match during the tournament.

Winners & Prizes

Hyundai also selected and announced the winners for the other on-line and off-line activities, where prizes included the free trip to Basel for the Eurofest and free tickets to the opening match. The other programs were "Hyundai EURO FanTastic," an on-line program where football fans uploaded their pictures expressing their passion for UEFA EURO 2008™and their national team; "Hyundai Quest for the Best," where participants competed in five minutes freestyle and most touches in a given time with the aim to break the Guinness record; and "Be There with Hyundai," where the participants competed to create the best slogan for their team. The winning slogan will be decorated on the respective teams´ buses.

Baschi & Reamonn

The festivities reached its climax when the Swiss singer Baschi came on stage to sing his hit song, "Bring en hei," which has established itself as the Swiss football anthem. Fans were also dazzled with German rock band Reamonn, who gained international acclaim with their hit song "Supergirl."

Official Vehicles

As an EUROTOP Partner of UEFA EURO 2008™, Hyundai will provide vehicles for VIP delegates, teams, coaches and referees. A total of 265 passenger vehicles and vans along with coaches totalling 463 bus days will be supported by Hyundai throughout the tournament. Hyundai has already demonstrated itself to be a reliable and effective partner of UEFA having served as the official automotive supplier for the European Football Championship 2000 and 2004.

Hyundai is one of the strongest supporters of football in the world having served as the official sponsor of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea / Japan™ and the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ as well as many other FIFA tournaments. The company has extended its strategic sponsorship agreement with FIFA to cover the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Hyundai Motor Company has not only infused a new sense of fun and excitement into the game, but through its sponsorship of international football it has also achieved significant increases in brand awareness and improvements in the brand image. Football has helped Hyundai secure a firm foundation that will enable it to push its sports marketing strategy forward to gain a better foothold in markets where football reigns as the most popular sport, especially Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

May 13, 2008 - Hyundai rolls out 2009 Sonata

PRESS RELEASE:

2009 SONATA: TRANSFORMED FROM THE INSIDE OUT FOR A MORE PREMIUM AND FUEL-EFFICIENT MID-SIZE SEDAN EXPERIENCE

CHICAGO, February 6, 2008
As gas prices and competition in the mid-size sedan segment surge, Hyundai is introducing its refreshed Sonata at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show today. The 2009 Sonata features an all-new interior, enhanced suspensions and revised powertrains boasting both improved fuel economy and horsepower. The 2009 Sonata will be available at Hyundai dealers later this month.

The Sonata combines refined design, proven dependability, spirited performance and an extensive list of standard features to increase its appeal to a broader range of customers. For 2009, Sonata raises the bar for value and standard safety technology in the mid-size segment. Hyundai's sales leader boasts new features ranging from standard USB/iPod auxiliary inputs to available navigation and sport-tuned suspension. Combined with Sonata's continued leadership in safety
it remains the only mid-size sedan under $20,000 with standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
the 2009 American-made Sonata is the smartest choice in the competitive mid-size sedan segment.

CHOICE OF TWO MORE POWERFUL AND FUEL-EFFICIENT POWERTRAINS

The 2009 Sonata debuts Hyundai's second-generation Theta four-cylinder engine. The Theta II 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine delivers more horsepower and quicker acceleration, while also improving fuel economy. In fact, the Sonata I4 is now more fuel-efficient than both Camry and Accord four-cylinder engines, delivering an impressive 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway fuel economy rating with the standard five-speed manual transmission or the newly available five-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC
®
. The Theta II is rated at 175 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque. This high-tech, all-aluminum, 16-valve engine now features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on both camshafts and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. A version of this engine also meets Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards.

Theta II 2.4-liter DOHC inline-four cylinder engine

Sonata's 3.3-liter V6 engine has also been improved for more performance and efficiency. It now pumps out 15 more horsepower and three more pound-feet of torque (249 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 229 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm). The first member of Hyundai's "Lambda" V6 engine family, this newly refined powerplant features all-aluminum construction, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, CVVT on both camshafts and stiffer hydraulic engine mounts for optimum power, efficiency and refinement. A variable intake system is added for 2009, which further broadens its power curve, improving off-the-line acceleration and passing performance. New mileage figures for V6-powered Sonatas are 19 mpg city/29 mpg highway, which represents unsurpassed V6 fuel economy in the mid-size sedan segment.

All V6-powered Sonatas use Hyundai's five-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission, which features an overdrive lock-up torque converter for improved highway fuel economy. Neither Accord nor Camry offer manual-mode operation as standard equipment. The automatic transmission has a new reducing valve and solenoid valve for smoother shift quality while the manual transmission has been refined for more precise shifts.

A NEW, WELL-CRAFTED INTERIOR THAT IS STILL A "CLASS ABOVE"

The pleasant surprises continue inside where Hyundai designers have thoroughly revamped the cockpit to create the ambiance of an upscale, premium sedan. The sophisticated look is achieved thanks to a completely new center console and instrument panel, which borrows design cues and rich materials from the premium Hyundai Veracruz. The Sonata continues to be classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Large Car, truly a "class above" Camry, Altima, Fusion and Malibu (all are categorized as mid-size cars). Even in trunk room, the Sonata shines. Sonata's 16.3 cu. ft. of trunk space give it an eight percent advantage over the Camry, and a 16 percent advantage over Accord.

Music lovers will welcome the 2009 Sonata's inclusion of standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods
®
. Among the other refinements are the addition of dual-zone climate controls for the driver and front-seat passenger, and two-stage front seat warmers. A new factory-installed touch screen navigation system is now available as well.

More contrast has been added to the Camel and Gray interiors, and for the first time ever, Cocoa Brown is available. The front cupholders are also upgraded for more capacity and holding power. Hyundai's signature blue backlighting for interior gauges, switches and buttons highlights the vehicle's modern interior design.

SUPPLE RIDE, AGILE HANDLING

An advanced four-wheel independent suspension system combines a supple ride with sharper handling and steering response for Sonata GLS and Limited models. Up front is a double-wishbone system with coil springs, revalved, twin-tube, gas-filled hydraulic shock absorbers, and a larger 26 mm stabilizer bar. The system's lower control arms increase handling precision while reducing vibration, and bushing size has been increased to better absorb the shock from road impacts.

In back, a new sophisticated multi-link system provides excellent handling along with superb ride quality and noise isolation. The rear spring rates have been increased by five percent, shocks revalved and the sway bar thickened from 15 mm to 16 mm. All together, this suspension now provides superior control of ride motions for a more dynamic driving experience.

The high-performance Sonata SE becomes an even more exciting and willing partner for enthusiastic drivers with its own unique sport-tuned suspension. The new sport-tuned suspension features a 15 percent stiffer front spring rate, 10 percent stiffer rear spring rate, unique strut valving at all four corners and 27 mm front and 17 mm rear stabilizer bars along with unique 17-inch alloy wheels and tires.

All Sonatas also now have quicker ratio steering for a crisp feel on turn in.

SOPHISTICATED EXTERIOR DESIGN

The design team added a more refined touch to Sonata's exterior design, with new bumpers, lamps, wheels and grille creating a more elegant, dynamic and taut stance.

The unibody design crafted of high-tensile steel features a concave hood design, distinctive rear-door cut lines, strong Z-lined body-to-bumper interfaces and four-barrel jeweled projector lens headlights. New chrome bodyside and bumper moldings match the chrome grille and chrome-accented exterior door handles on Limited models. The model range offers a choice of seven new colors.

UNSURPASSED ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY

On the safety side, 2009 Sonata's front collision performance has been further improved by tweaking the design of the engine subframe. The Hyundai Sonata is expected to earn the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) top five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts. This accomplishment was made possible by Sonata's strong body structure and advanced airbag technology. Sonata delivers an unsurpassed commitment to both active and passive safety technology. Every Sonata has lifesaving ESC as standard equipment. This is important because NHTSA has reported that ESC results in 35 percent fewer single-vehicle crashes and 30 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities in passenger cars.

The Sonata also features a state-of-the-art braking technology package. The package includes four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to automatically adjust the braking force to front and rear axles based on the vehicle loading conditions.

In the event that a crash is unavoidable, the Sonata features six airbags-including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags-along with active front-seat head restraints. Other passive safety features include shingle-style rear-seat head restraints for improved visibility, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, front-seat seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters, and a rear-seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system for child seats.

THREE ENHANCED, WELL-EQUIPPED MODELS

From the well-equipped GLS, to the sport-focused SE, to the downright luxurious Limited, the 2009 Sonata lineup addresses the needs and desires of mid-size sedan customers with a highly competitive mix of features and benefits. Each model delivers a level of standard equipment that is a cut above competing models.

SONATA GLS

The 2009 Sonata GLS continues to provide value and a sizable price advantage compared with its four-cylinder competition, undercutting the lesser-equipped base 2008 Honda Accord and 2008 Toyota Camry. All Sonata models have offered standard ESC since May 2005. This is important, as NHTSA claims ESC is the most effective lifesaving technology since the seatbelt. In comparison, Toyota still offers ESC only as an option on the 2008 Camry, while Honda Accord has only recently matched Sonata with standard ESC on the new 2008 Accord, more than two years after Sonata made this commitment to active safety technology leadership.

Sonata features a new, sophisticated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine matched to a smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission, with a new five-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission optional.

The Sonata GLS features an impressive array of standard active and passive safety features including ESC, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), six airbags, ABS and active front head restraints. Other standard features include power windows, door locks and outside heated side mirrors, keyless entry with alarm, an AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with USB/iPod
®
auxiliary inputs, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, air conditioning, cruise control and tilt-adjustable steering column.

The Popular Equipment Package includes automatic headlights, chrome window belt moldings, woodgrain interior accents, power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, steering wheel audio controls and a trip computer. A sunroof is also available.

SONATA SE
I4 OR V6 PERFORMANCE, REMARKABLE VALUE

The sport-focused SE adds a unique sport-tuned suspension as standard equipment, matched with a smooth-shifting B&M Racing five-speed manual transmission (2.4L four-cylinder) or optional five-speed automatic (3.3L V6). Other performance-oriented SE features include 17-inch alloy wheels with unique, handling-focused 215/55R17 all-season performance tires, rear decklid spoiler, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, special cloth seats with leather bolsters, and an eight-way power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support. SE tires feature stiffer sidewalls and a unique tread design for more responsive steering and capable handling. The Sonata SE V6 adds dual chrome exhaust tips.

Other standard features include automatic headlights, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, chrome window belt moldings, telescoping steering wheel and a trip computer. The Premium Package includes an AM/FM/XM/6-CD Changer/MP3 audio system with USB/iPod
® auxiliary inputs, six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier, power tilt-and-slide sunroof, and an electrochromic auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink® and a compass.

SONATA LIMITED

The feature-packed Sonata Limited is a fully equipped luxury model for mid-size sedan buyers who want it all-at a great price. The interior features luxurious leather seating surfaces, a standard Infinity AM/FM/XM Satellite/6-CD Changer/MP3 audio system with six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier, an eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats and power sunroof. Other upgrades include automatic temperature control, an electrochromic auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink and compass, sliding center armrest, premium scuff plates and 215/55R17 tires. The Sonata Limited is so well equipped that the only option besides the engine choice is a navigation system. Sonata Limited four-cylinder and V6 models feature a five-speed automatic transmission with the added control of SHIFTRONIC manual shifting.

May 13, 2008 - Toyota Yaris vs Hyundai Getz

Toyota Yaris vs Hyundai Getz

Overview

The Toyota Yaris has gone to great lengths to advertise their vehicle and it is a great small vehicle. The downside to it is that if you're looking for a vehicle that can tote around a large amount of people, this is definitely not the car for you.

Is the Hyundai Getz worth purchasing though? Personally, I would never be seen purchasing this car. Not only does it lack an attractive appearance, but also lacks innovative features. For everyday driving of course, there is nothing wrong with this vehicle if you have the intention of keeping it in the city. But it is definitely not for the curvy and bendy roads out in the country.

The Toyota Yaris definitely beats out the Hyundai Getz in almost all areas.

Details

The Toyota Yaris has gone to great lengths to advertise their vehicle. They are boldly standing by the fact that this car has clever thinking and tons of features. When you first enter the vehicle will most likely be surprised at the amount of space that there actually is. As you sit in the car you can see clearly out of it without any obstructions in view. From a driver's perspective this is definitely a good thing.

If you look at the stats of the engine it certainly doesn't appear to be anything spectacular. The engine is a 1.5 L four-cylinder that produces around 80 kW at 6000 RPMs and about 141nM of torque at 4200 RPMs. For every day use though, this engine definitely does the job. The car being discussed is fitted with a four speed automatic transmission. Although this may not be the preference of many, it actually fits the car quite well. It managed to stay in the correct gear at all times with no problem. With the ability to go from zero to one hundred kilometers in about 10.2 seconds, this car was definitely starting to impress me. Although 10.2 seconds is not a record time, this is very reasonable for a car of this size.

Once you're ready to drive the vehicle be sure to only lightly press down on the acceleration as it is very sensitive. Since the acceleration is so touchy, it may take a little bit of time to get used to before mastering. Even the slightest amount of pressure can send this vehicle flying to great speeds. I would deftly recommend getting used this before taking it out on the highways.

There is one thing you can be sure of when driving the Toyota Yaris, and that is you will absolutely never run out of any storage spaces. Seriously, they can be found almost everywhere in the vehicle. In fact, there are a total of 25 storage spaces that can be found throughout the vehicle. You can easily fit up to four normal sized adults without any problems, but if you try to put fit any more than that you will find that it will get fairly tight, pretty quick. So if you're looking for a vehicle that can tote around a large amount of people, this is definitely not the car for you.

As far as the sound system goes in this vehicle, you should be very pleased. The CD player plays normal CDs, but is also MP3 compatible. The sound clearly comes blasting out of four different speakers, providing you with a pleasurable music experience. One of my favorite features is that the steering wheel as button controls for the radio. But these controls you can adjust the song selection and radio station without even taking your hands off the wheel.

At first, he may find it quite difficult to read the center set speedometer. However, with a bit of practice will get used to this and may even actually learn to enjoy it. You will find the digital tackle major speedometer located in the console within your peripheral vision at all times. You can easily glance over to see them without taking your eyes off the road for dangerous amount of time. This is definitely good since you are able to keep an eye on your speeds.

If you are big on safety you can add additional safety pack for an additional $750. This option adds seven airbags to the vehicle bringing it up to a five star safety rating. Personally, I think at this option is more than worth it. Even though the Toyota Yaris comes equipped with driver and passenger air bags, every extra safety feature is definitely welcomed.

The trunk of the Toyota Yaris is actually quite a sad sight. It is insanely small and doesn't provide sufficient room to store anything that you would normally put in your trunk. In comparison to the Hyundai Getz, you might as well not even have a trunk. The only plus side to this trunk is that it comes equipped with a hidden spare tire, which doesn't really make for the size of it.

In conclusion, the new Toyota Yaris is a great smaller vehicle. It has decent features, a great engine, and is quite enjoyable to drive. The only major downfall I found with this vehicle is the lack of trunk space. Other than that, one of the flaws may be in the price for what you get. The design definitely appeals to the younger generation more than it does to the older generations, and would make a great first car experience to have.

Now it's time to discuss the Hyundai Getz. Before doing my research on this vehicle I had very low expectations of it. Since it was acting as a replacement for the Hyundai Excel, which was as hideous as a car could possibly get, I wasn't expecting it to be anything really special. Once inside the vehicle though, I was shocked at the large size of the interior proportions. With the two door model, there really isn't enough room for the people in the back seat. Not only are they crammed in the car behind the passenger and driver, but the windows in the back don't even roll down. This gives passengers in the back absolutely no freedom and can make them feel a bit trapped. If you're claustrophobic, then you better make sure you are sitting in the front. At the same time though, while in the front seat you find yourself reaching your extremely far back just to reach your seatbelt.

The engine in the Hyundai Getz is a 1.6 L engine that produces a mere 78 kW of power. The numbers may seem small, but worked wonders for this car and feels a lot speedier. Another plus about having a smaller engine is fuel consumption. The Hyundai Getz uses approximately 6.2 L of fuel per 100 km traveled, which certainly isn't bad.

When you're out on the road the car certainly doesn't feel as large as it may seem from the inside, which in this case is a good thing. What I like most about the size is that you can finally feel that go kart style of driving that you may remember from older small cars. For some reason, most modern cars do not give you this kind of satisfaction. You are able to zoom through the streets and traffic with ease, great visibility, and complete control.

Is the Hyundai Getz worth purchasing though? Personally, I would never be seen purchasing this car. Not only does it lack an attractive appearance, but also lacks innovative features as well. For everyday driving of course, there is nothing wrong with this vehicle if you have the intention of keeping it in the city. If you're often out in the country and on winding roads in your best bet would be to stay away from this car.

In conclusion, the Toyota Yaris definitely beats out the Hyundai Getz. Both vehicles at the end of the day are not terrible ones to own. The Yaris just appears to have been built with a better quality in mind. It also has a much better looking exterior appearance. If you want a cheaper car that will take you from point A to point B with no problem, then you can go the Hyundai Getz. However, for just a little bit more money you could get a much better quality and stylish car if you go with the Toyota Yaris.

May 12, 2008 - Hyundai to Mass Produce Hybrid Cars Starting 2009

  • Hyundai´s First Hybrid Car for Mass Production Will be Avante (Elantra) LPI

  •
  • Hyundai to Produce Small Fleet of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles by 2012

  •
  • Greatly Improve Fuel Efficiency, Cut CO2 Emissions:

Opening a New Era for Environmentally-Friendly Cars

  •

(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company plans to mass produce Hybrid Electric Vehicles starting next year, opening a new era for environmentally-friendly cars.

While accompanying South Korean President Lee Myung Bak on a Kia Motors´ plant tour on March 21, Hyundai-Kia Chairman Chung Mong Koo said the automobile company will mass produce environmentally-friendly cars from 2009 to create new jobs and develop the industry into a next-generation value-adding growth engine.

"The importance of developing futuristic, environmentally-friendly cars is increasing for sustainable growth," Chairman Chung said. "Therefore, technology for advanced cars, like the hybrid, is imperative. We also plan to produce a small fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles from 2012."

To meet its 2009 mass production target, Hyundai´s step-by-step plan is to

                – Develop Technology

                – Create a mass production system

                – Expand model line-up

In accordance with this plan, Hyundai will begin its first mass production with the compact-sized LPG model, the Avante (Elantra) LPI (Liqufied Petroleum Injection) hybrid, a car that uses both Liquefied Petroleum Gas and electricity. In 2010, Hyundai plans to introduce mid-sized hybrids that use gasoline and LPG.

Currently, Hyundai provides Verna (Accent) hybrid models to government agencies as pilot projects. The plan is to expand the line-up to mid-sized sedans and beyond for mass production, starting from 2009.

Hyundai entered the environmentally-friendly auto market in October 2004, when it supplied the government with 50 Click (Getz) hybrid cars. Since then, Hyundai and Kia have supplied the government with 350 hybrid cars in 2005, including the Verna model. This number increased to 730 cars in 2006 and 1,682 cars in 2007, totalling about 2,800 cars so far.

Based on the technology accumulated from producing these cars, Hyundai will from 2009 mass produce hybrid cars that use LPG, which creates less pollution than conventional cars. Hyundai is also kicking its development plans into full gear with the aim to mass produce Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) beginning 2012.

Hyundai plans to expand a demo fleet of FCEV´s to 500 units by 2010, including mid-to-large size SUV´s, then establish a small production system to begin mass production from 2012.

The mass production of hybrid cars in 2009 will be a turning point for Hyundai, which will increase its competitiveness in the environmentally-friendly car sector, an area automakers worldwide are counting on for their strategic survival in the next-generation business sector.

Apr 6, 2008 - Hyundai Develops Commercial Vehicle With a Mild Hybrid System

  • New city bus will reduce engine idling and CO2 emissions while raising fuel efficiency

  •
  • Much more affordable solution than a full hybrid system

  •
  • Incheon, Suwon municipalities to start fleet tests of 12 units

  •
  • Mass production to start end of 2009

  •

(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Co., which last week announced plans to start retail sales in 2009 of hybrid electric vehicle passenger cars, has developed a cost and fuel-efficient city bus that employs a mild hybrid system based entirely on Hyundai’s proprietary technology. The application of a mild hybrid system to a commercial vehicle will accelerate the wider use of eco-friendly vehicles which reduce CO2 emissions and fuel costs.

The mild hybrid system uses an 8KW AC (alternating current) motor and generator which is used to automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle stops and to rapidly spin it back up when the driver releases the brake pedal. It also transforms wasted kinetic energy?during braking of the vehicle?into electrical energy which powers the engine’s cooling fan motor. Depending on driving conditions, a vehicle equipped with this mild hybrid system will be able to save between 15~20 percent in fuel costs.

This mild hybrid system can be easily applied to any diesel or CNG-powered vehicle and costs about one-fifth the price of a full hybrid system. While full hybrid systems can improve fuel efficiency by up to 50 percent compared to a conventionally-powered vehicle, their substantially higher initial cost results in a much longer payback period which make full hybrids less appealing to commercial vehicle fleet owners.

Hyundai Motor Co. will supply two city buses to a Suwon transit bus company in early April and 10 buses to another bus operator in Incheon at the end of April for fleet testing, which will be closely monitored. Hyundai plans to mass produce the mild hybrid city buses by the end of 2009. The company will complete the development of a full hybrid system by mid-year and the full hybrid buses are scheduled to go into the first fleet tests in the second half of this year.

Hyundai estimates that a city bus with the mild hybrid system will be able to cut about 6-8 million won in diesel fuel costs a year.

If the idle stop and go system is applied universally to all trucks and buses, the mild hybrid technology could play a key role in reducing emissions and CO2 and other hydrocarbons and help prevent global warming.

Mar 19, 2008 - Old Commercial Poster for Cars

    Feb 24, 2008 - Hyundai´s i30 Chosen as Spain´s "Car of the Year"

    - First time an Asian brand has won the award
    - Most prestigious award in Spain’s automotive industry
    - Received 220 points, beating the Fiat 500 and Ford Mondeo by huge gap

(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company´s i30 was chosen as Spain’s "Car of the Year 2008," the first time for an Asian carmaker, proving once again that the Korean marque, the world’s sixth-largest automobile company, has made great advances in technology, design and safety. The award follows the i30’s outstanding recognition in Australia, where it was voted as both "2007 Car of the Year” and “2007 Green Car of the Year."
Hyundai´s i30 received the award on Feb. 14 in Madrid, which was organized by the Spanish newspaper ABC. The i30 gained a total of 220 points, leaving the competition far behind. The Fiat 500, which placed second, scored 52 points, while the Ford Mondeo came in third with 36 points. This is the first time a brand won the award by gaining such a big advantage over its competitors.
The award ceremony was presided by Spain’s Minister of Industry, D. Joan Clos and by the President of the Community of Madrid, Mrs. Esperanza Aguirre. The prize was received by the President of Hyundai Motor Europe, Mr. Kun Hee Ahn. The ceremony was attended by the top executives of Vocento Group as well as the Berge Group, headed by its President, Mr. Jaime Gorbena. The representatives of most of the car brands, as well as the specialized automotive media, were also present.
The i30 was judged by a jury composing of 52 journalists from a wide variety of Spanish media, including newspaper, specialized magazines, television, radio and news agencies. The jury based their points on exterior and interior design, reliability, performance, safety and market segment volume.
The journalists recognized that the i30 leads Hyundai Motor into the front ranks of the industry and that it’s a vehicle that confidently meets the standards of a market as demanding as the European market. Expectations for the i30 are high not only in the Spanish market, but in Europe overall, which makes us very optimistic that future models developed by Hyundai will not only equal, but excel, the award-winning i30.
All the models taking part in this award, the most prestigious in Spain’s automotive industry, were launched in 2007. A lot of very important vehicles were introduced to the Spanish market last year, such as the Ford Mondeo, Renault Laguna, Toyota Auris, Peugeot 308, Fiat 500 and many others. Thus, Hyundai is proud to have triumphed in such an important year.
The ´Car of the Year´ awards began in 1973. The 2008 awards was the 36th to take place. This is the first time that an Asian Brand has won the “Car of the Year” in Spain, a prize almost always reserved for the European brands (Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat).

    i30 in Australia
The Hyundai i30 won both the 2007 Car of the Year and 2007 Green Car of the Year in Australia.
The i30 CRDi SX manual with protecz pack won the prestigious CARSguide Car of the Year 2007 award. Praised by the judging panel for its style, handling and performance features, the i30 was also voted CARSguide Green Car of the Year for its market-leading environmental credentials - and remains Australia’s most affordable diesel engine car.
Following an exhaustive evaluation and assessment process, the CARSguide national judging panel, which comprised some of Australia´s most prominent Motoring Editors and senior Motoring writers, agreed that the Hyundai i30 clearly outperformed all 48 original competitors. The i30 CRDi was determined the winner, receiving 94 out of a possible 99 points. The judges assessed the cars against 10 criteria, before ranking the finalists from 1-11 (1 being the best) to determine the winning Car of the Year 2007.

Hyundai Motor Co.’s i30 was chosen as Spain’s “2008 Car of the Year,” the first time an Asia brand has won the award. The award ceremony was held at ABC’s office in Madrid on Feb. 14. Spain’s Minister of Industry, D. Joan Clos, right, and President of the Community of Madrid, Mrs. Esperanza Aguirre, left, pose with the Hyundai i30.

    Jan 24, 2008 - Hyundai i30

If my memory serves me right, June, 2007 Hyundai Motor had official press release for its new mid-sized model i30 and now on sales in S. Korea.

Hyundai i30 is mid-sized car like Hyundai Avante or GM Daewoo Lacetti but major difference is Hyundai i30 is hatchback mid-sized to appeal both families and youngsters. Until recently, in Korea, somehow hatchback model was not popular much and for that (I have to admit) Hyundai i30 may rewrite history of hatchback car in Korea.

Hyundai went to 2007 Geneva Motor Show with i30, and

these are the directly from 2007GMS press information.

Geneva 2007: Hyundai introduce a new car, the i30 and a new alpha-numeric nomenclature philosophy. Future new models will bear the prefix "i" and an additional 2 digits. Why "I"? Primarily because "i" stands for INSPIRATION which is one of the 3 pillars of Hyundai's European brand positioning (Quality, Self-assured, Inspiring). But "i" also stands for intelligence and integrity, and that is what customers have come to expect from Hyundai; and for innovative, which is what the i30 is all about. In all these forms "i" lies at the core of any Hyundai brand promise. From this premise the "i" badge is a natural development.

    Welcome to the i World!

With the i30, Hyundai introduces a new dedicated European model range firmly positioned in the mainstream C segment. Designed for those who want stylish practicality with a distinctive dash of sporting flair, the i30 is aimed at the discerning individual who wants something different, but with proven integrity and quality. Available at launch as a 5-door hatchback, followed by an estate car, the i30 opens a new chapter for Hyundai in Europe.

    Exterior

    Creative Flair

Flowing curves, emphasised by strong character lines highlight the broad stance and long wheelbase of the i30. The clearly defined unbroken waistline unifies the classic proportions. The effect is modern, yet exciting, giving a dynamic impression of performance and capability. Key words: elegant and balanced sporting style.

    A more cultivated design language

The distinguished frontal styling, sporting but non-aggressive - represents the new design identity of Hyundai. The pronounced dual intake frontal styling seems to mould effortlessly into the bonnet and A pillar lines. The upsweep of the rear window lines mirrors the lower character line. The harmonic effect creates a distinct and dynamic posture.

    All elements fully integrated

The sculpted rear appearance is achieved by a combination of qualified curves that extend the waistline and reflect the curvaceous front and side styling. Every element of the design works in harmony. The seemingly effortless interaction of front and rear light clusters, unobtrusive roof spoiler and superb front proportions, all contribute a powerful sense of proportion and purpose. The interaction of dynamic sloping surfaces gives a pronounced sporting touch.

    Interior

    Dynamic refinement

The long wheelbase and generous width of the i30, combined with Hyundai's acknowledged skill in interior space packaging have produced an interior fully focused upon class-leading comfort, functionality and practicality. Dynamic refinement has been applied to every aspect, including air management, the light airy ambience, seating comfort and intuitive ergonomics.

    The benefits of dynamic refinement

The i30 was conceived from the beginning as a driver's car. The clarity of the instruments, tilt and telescope steering wheel, supportive sporty seats and optimal gearshift positioning are all evidence of this. For extra clarity, LCD technology has been used for the central info display and the instrument panel mounted display and warning lights. Generous directional air vents ensure optimum interior air distribution. Two-tone interior trim, with special attention to the upholstery fabrics and materials has produced a elegant and fresh, highly "European" interior environment.

    Blue instrument lighting

The LED based blue instrument lighting, already adopted in the new Santa Fe and Hyundai upper market ranges, is a distinctive feature. The advantages are less eyestrain and fatigue under all ambient light conditions, helping to maintain peak driver alertness and vision. The blue lightning also represents a recognition of the Hyundai brand which gives the occupants a confided impression of being in a Hyundai car.

    The ergonomics of dynamic refinement

For years now, Hyundai has been proving that a car does not have to be large to feel spacious, or carry a premium price to offer an intelligent interior. The i30 is just the latest expression of this. Intuitive ergonomics are evident in all of the minor controls. The convenience of the steering wheel audio/communication switches and column stalks, together with the easy to handle positioning of heating, air conditioning and power windows and mirrors amply demonstrate this. The easy access to the integrated Audio system, map pockets and other stowage and storage areas are another Hyundai strength that characterises the i30. Even the positioning and precise feel of the automatic gearshift has been further optimised. All contribute to the reality of a driver's car.

    Seating

    Seating to inspire superlatives

A car that offers above average sporting appeal must also provide the supportive seating to enjoy it. The front seats and contoured rear seats of the i30 provide long distance comfort and support. Attention has been paid not only to the form, with orthopaedic design input, but also to the stitching and using superior materials. The result is seating comfort designed to meet and match the very best European ideals.

    The ideal integrated interior

The i30's dimensions at 4,245 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,480 mm high, fit i30 totally to current C Class expectations. In addition, the long wheelbase of 2,650 mm offers superior inside spaciousness, which has received the full force of Hyundai intelligent interior design. The extra space allowed the designers to optimise every aspect. The result is increased freedom of movement, optimal seat and instrument positioning, and increased comfort. Both front and rear head and legroom are well above the accepted average.

    Adaptability throughout

Every i30 has 60/40 split folding rear seats which fold whenever required for added storage, functionality and practicality without compromising on safety and comfort. The i30 offers rear seat passengers fully contoured support, increased legroom over most rivals and excellent cabin air management. For the front seat occupants, height adjustable seats and lumbar support could not be more easily placed or operated. With excellent legroom, drivers can enjoy the ride in a very comfortable setting.

Rear space with the capacity to convince

The i30 matches above average occupant space with generous, easy access luggage capacity. A useful and fully useable 821mm length, 1,040 mm width and 558mm height in the luggage area gives an impressive 340 litres load volume with the rear seats upright. With the rear seats folded flat, the load space length is increased to 1,141 mm increasing the load volume to 1,250 litres. As in any Hyundai, the utility and convenience in the i30 has not been overlooked with a standard luggage cover and an optional restraining net.

    Equipment

Fully equipped to fit every purpose

Hyundai have always been recognised for their generosity of equipment at all trim levels, and the i30 builds upon that tradition. The range of standard equipment combined with a full selection of reasonable cost extras, allows i30 customers to fully tailor their car to their wishes.

    A wide selection

The i30 will be available in 4 different trim levels. Even the entry level trim "Classic" offers an abundant array of features the integrated Audio system (Radio+CD+MP3+USB+AUX), driver seat height adjuster, and front power windows. The more upscale "Comfort" offers electric heated and body-coloured outside mirrors, keyless entry, driver seat lumbar support, front seat active headrests and front fog lamps. The sportier "Style" version is available from the 1.6, 122ps power level, with 16" alloy wheels, 205/55 R16 tires, sports suspension, tire pressure monitor, semi-leather seats and manual air conditioning all standard. The top-of-the-range version "Premium" lives up to the badge by offering all these items, plus automatic air conditioning, ESP, ECM mirror, park distance control, cruise control and rain sensor. ESP of course is for all versions and all trims available as an option while for the most European markets ESP will be standard feature.

    Storage, stowage and convenience

No one can dispute that Hyundai are among the best when it comes to intelligent interior convenience, stowage and storage packaging. The i30 lives up to, and builds upon this reputation. Depending on trim levels, a sunglass holder, a cup holder, a central console storage, easy to reach door map pockets, seat rear pockets and central armrest mounted storage, and rear cup holders are additional convenient features. The capacious glove compartment is also cooled when air conditioning is fitted.

    Engines & Transmissions

    Engines and Transmissions

A choice of three petrol and three diesel power options, combined with manual or automatic transmission means the i30 can meet virtually every driving, or geographic powertrain preference. All petrol engines have 16v CVVT and variable inlet technology. All diesel engines can be best described as state-of-the-art.

A real choice of power and dynamics

The i30 offers a wide range of engines. At the entry-level, Hyundai's new 109ps 1.4 petrol engine offers a sparkling combination of fuel economy and performance with 137 Nm torque. A new 1.6 engine gives 122ps and 154 Nm torque, while the range topping 2.0 offers 143ps with 186 Nm torque.

In terms of diesel, a new 1.6 CRDi is available in 90ps version with 235 Nm torque and 115ps versions with an outstanding 255 Nm torque. At the top end, the 2.0 CRDi puts out an exhilarating 140ps with 304 Nm torque. All feature variable geometry turbo charging (VGT), low friction balance shaft technology and high-pressure common rail diesel injection for minimised engine originated NVH. To meet environ-mental policy, i30 offers DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) for all diesel line-up.

    Transmitting the power

Hyundai understands that performance means more than just engine output. That is why transmission packages have been optimised for real driving satisfaction.

    Automatic Transmission

For adventurous driving spirit, an elegant, yet stylish step gate shift lever has been adopted, allowing extra precise control of the new i30's automatic transmission.

    Manual Transmission

Manual transmission remains the favourite for European drivers. The new i30's manual gearbox also boasts newly developed high-efficiency features that reduce noise and enhance durability. The 5-speed all-synchro transmission of the i30 has been specifically engineered to match the sporting nature of the car with precise, short throw shifts. The 2 litre diesel features a new 6-speed manual transmission.

Suspension and braking to match the performance

In any of the four available launch versions, the Hyundai i30 offers a dynamic, yet cultivated driving experience. MacPherson strut front suspensions and multi-link rear suspension have been fitted to perfectly complement the high design rigidity. Ventilated 15 inch front and solid 14 inch rear discs* with 4-channel ABS and ESP* mean the dynamic appearance is matched to real on-road handling control. A range of 15, 16 inch steel and 15, 16 and 17 inch alloy wheels, with low and ultra-low profile tyres add visual impact to the sporting dynamics. The result is a car that simply demands to be driven.

    Safety Aspects

    The safety aspects

Like every other Hyundai, the i30 was safe even before it reached prototype stage. Advanced design systems and sophisticated computer simulation, combined with intensive component testing meant that by the time the real tests came only conceptual fine-tuning was required. That is typical of the Hyundai approach to safety. It begins on the drawing board, is thoroughly tested by prototype stage, and fulfils every expectation on the road.

    Passive safety

The i30 is fully equipped to protect. In terms of passive safety, it features dual front, side, and curtain airbags, active headrests, seatbelt pretensioning and seatbelt reminders. Also, as with every Hyundai vehicle, the passive safety features are fully grounded in a state-of-the-art safety structure. This includes deformable zones, occupant protection cell and 3-way load distribution technology. Further rigidity has been achieved with reinforced A-pillars, strengthened bulkhead, front and side members, and toughened B and C pillars.
