Statistically most people look for cars on the internet way before they ever arrive on a car lot and many of them have done their homework. Most car dealerships have internet departments to help these individuals who do not feel like dealing with the car lot process. This way people are able to get the information they want and decide for themselves if they would then like to visit the dealership. Another great thing about contacting this department is the fact that they are there to provide you with information not to sell you a car. I don't think its a secret that they would like you to visit the dealership but they can generally give you a price for the vehicle you want that way you can have a set deal and only visit the dealership to see the car, fill out your paperwork, and leave. I personally love talking with people and I think that internet shopping is the fastest way to car shop.
