The term certified pre-owned refers to used cars that are offered with automaker-backed warranties that extend the new car's initial coverage — ranging from three months up to three years. To be labeled certified pre-owned, a used vehicle must meet a rigorous set of quality standards that are determined by the manufacturer. If factory-trained technicians find problems during the CPO inspection, they fix the issues or disqualify the car from the program.
