Step 1: Decide what you want your car to do. Do you want it to sit lower? Do you want a race car appearance or would you like to just keep the feel of the stock shock absorbers?

Step 2:
Decide what type of shock absorber you would like. The type of car you have will influence your decision, speak to your mechanic for advise. Your choices are:

  • MacPherson Struts, which combine the shock absorber in a part that also replaces the upper control arm and ball joint.

  •
  • Strut cartridges, which are used as replacements in rebuildable strut housings.

  •
  • Coilover or spring-perch shock absorbers

  •
  • Adjustable shock absorbers, which allow the damping to be changed by some mechanism inside the shock absorber or electronically.

Step 3: Consider other modifications to the car. Whether you plan to also upgrade the wheels and tires, whether you will lower the vehicle, if you are changing the springs new shocks are necessary.
