Step 1: Make sure that you have performed all of the necessary maintenance on your vehicle.
Your vehicle's owner's manual will contain a list of the maintenance that should be performed and tell you when it needs to be done.

Step 2: Inspect your vehicle's tires.
Even if you are all up-to-date in terms of regularly scheduled maintenance, it is a good idea to check your vehicle over before you go on a long trip.  First, check the tire pressure.  Properly inflated tires will improve your vehicle's gas mileage and help you to avoid a blowout.  Also, make sure to evaluate the condition of your tires.  Make sure that they have enough tread left on them.  If you are headed some place snowy, you may want to think about using snow tires.

Step 3: Check the oil.
Pop your car or truck's hood and check the oil level.  If you need to, make sure to add oil before you go on your trip.

Step 4: Check the coolant mixture.
Now check the coolant mixture with an antifreeze tester.

Step 5: Test the battery.
If your vehicle has an old battery, you may want to have it tested at a certified repair shop, or just replace it with a new one before heading out.

Step 6: Check the transmission fluid.
It is a good idea to check your vehicle's transmission fluid level before you leave as well.

Step 7: Inspect your wiper blades.
If they aren't working properly, make sure to replace them before you leave.

Step 8: Fill your wiper fluid.
If your vehicle needs it, make sure to top off the wiper fluid reservoir as well.  Lot's of junk is going to stick to your windshield on a long drive and nothing is more annoying than not being able to wash it off.

Step 9: Bring a roadside emergency kit.
It'd not a bad idea to bring an emergency roadside kit with you in your vehicle when you are going on a long trip.  Check out the following guide for information on how to make one: How to Create an Emergency Roadside Kit for Your Car or Truck.

Step 10: Bring your cell phone.
Always remember to bring your cell phone with you on long trips.  It can help you out in the event of an emergency.

Step 11: Map out your trip before you leave.
If your vehicle does not have a factory installed or aftermarket navigation system, make sure to print out directions from a site like Mapquest before you leave.  If you are a member of AAA, you can map out your trip on a Triptik before you go.
