I had 3 goals for this project...

1.  Look good.  Some of the vent clips are bigger than the GPS...

2.  Be easily removed with no trace of GPS.  Some people steal GPS units and if you leave a mounting bracket, they break in your car anyway to get the GPS.

3. Hold firmly without rattles.

All I did was purchase the cup holders and clip off the top part so it fit in the vent.  Then I measured the distance needed between pieces so it would fit around the center piece between the vents.  I could have put it over one vent, but I liked it better centered.  Take your time and if you screw up, you have two more pieces to work with.

The Gps stays in place and is easily removed by moving the vent slats up and pulling the unit out.

Good luck

This works! We have a GPS that we share between vehicles. Even using the suction cup thing is a pain and always leaves a tell-tale mark on the windshield. I got three cup holders from Auto Zone and each vehicle now has its own GPS holder. Great idea and cheap to boot! Thanks!

Pretty slick trick for a "slowlearner" lol.
