Most Europeans have always been jealous and perplexed about the cheap cost of fuel ( gas and diesel) in America. many European countries and rd workd countries too, pay up to 2 times what Americas pay at the pump and for that reason, have never really had to consider a reliable alternative to the gas engine. In Europe where many countries citizens could not afford the grand life style of the American dream, running a car cheaply was a practical way of life. the diesel engine was developed in Germany by Rudolf Diesel, although there is also a claim that a British inventor developed the engine too, but did not patent his engine, anyway, Rudolf's diesel engine was designed to run on peanut butter oil. Well any vegetable oil would work and pretty much that is still the case with the diesel engine today...
